Synths like EZDrummer or VB3 cannot be played/recorded in real time unless ALL effects racks in the project are turned off. If ANY effect is active, the latency is >500 ms (estimate). This is on the Platinum 2016.07 update. ASIO buffer size can be set to any value from 64 to 1024 with same result - the reported latency @1024 buffer size is only 20.7 ms but in reality it is much, much longer.

are you sure ANY effect causes this?

it may just be one that adds a lot of latency (like a linear phase EQ)

Yes, definitely sounds like a plugin-induced latency issue. Find the plugin that is adding the latency and disable it until you are done recording. It may also help you to understand why the plugin adds the latency by contacting the plugin vendor or reading the manual.

Yeah, Rob, I'm sure - ANY effect in my project will cause it. That is not to say that ANY effect at all will cause it; I haven't tried them all. But, I've gone through all in my project one at a time and the latency occurs for each individual effect. It doesn't really matter what effects they are. In my mind, the solution will always be the same - disable all effects rather than wasting time hunting down culprits. It's just a PITA to have to do that and very time consuming to figure out what was going on.

Thanks, Dan. Now knowing the cause, I will not enable any effects while tracking MIDI devices. It doesn't pay for me to track down or worry about which plug-in is causing the problem. Today it might be one and tomorrow another - who cares? Fortunately for me, I usually finish my tracking before inserting any effects. In this particular instance, I was trying to insert MIDI instruments into an existing, partially mixed, project which unusual for me.

PDC is not new to 2016.07 and not all plug-ins require it. When using the new LP plug-ins while tracking switch them to non-linear in the precision tab in the expert settings. That is probably what they should be set to on tracks anyway. Also try toggling the PDC button when tracking after applying plug-ins designed for mixing/mastering. It is also possible to bypass individual FX racks by right-clicking the rack and selecting the option. Turning effects off does not reduce PDC, the plug-ins must be bypassed or PDC turned off entirely.

FWIW, the usual suspects are linear phase plug-ins, some dynamics processors and IR reverbs.

Thanks scook! I found the solution below in the help file. It sounds simpler than my technique of disabling each individual effects rack.
To globally bypass all effects in a project
[image]mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\Cakewalk\SONAR%20Platinum\SONAR.chm::/Graphics/orange-arrow.png[/image]
Do one of the following:

[image]mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\Cakewalk\SONAR%20Platinum\SONAR.chm::/Graphics/orange-arrow.png[/image]
In the Control Bar’s Mix module, click the Bypass all Effects button [image]mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\Cakewalk\SONAR%20Platinum\SONAR.chm::/images/Mixing.30.1.png[/image].

[image]mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\Cakewalk\SONAR%20Platinum\SONAR.chm::/Graphics/orange-arrow.png[/image]
Press E.

All FX Racks in the active project are temporarily bypassed. To restore the bins to their original state, click the Bypass all Effects button [image]mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\Cakewalk\SONAR%20Platinum\SONAR.chm::/images/Mixing.30.2.png[/image] again.
 [image]mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\Cakewalk\SONAR%20Platinum\SONAR.chm::/Graphics/Note.png[/image]
Note: The Bypass all Effects option is only a temporary toggle, and is not saved with the project.

Wow, my last post was formatted so nicely when I previewed it - just like the help doc, boxes and all! Oh well, sorry for the hard to read stuff...

Yes, the FX button (shortcut E) bypasses all plug-ins and recomputes PDC. I figured you already new about that which is why I mentioned alternatives.

I probably did know about it already but my mind operates like a steel trap - nothing ever gets out! I'm old and suffer from CRS (Can't remember ****).
