Sorry I was unclear as to the version of Sonar I was using. I rushed the typing of the Topic and left out the X in X3.

Chuck, you hit the nail on the head with the post you quoted from X1 on working in the registry. Now that is a scary place to mess with and I haven't restarted my machine but I just tried to export a mix to .wav file and BINGO!!! it worked just as it is suppose to.

A little minor problem is that is shut off my soundcard and I had to reboot it (the card is external connected by a firewire). But the wav file recorded correctly and played back correctly (after the soundcard reboot that is). I am not sure if that is a problem in the soundcard or just the heat today (94 degrees in this room right now and NO air conditioning).

Thanks Chuck and EVERYONE who contributed to this thread. It is much appreciated.

were getting there

Something I probably should have researched was your soundcard.
the Mackie Onyx (not Onyx I / but just regular Onyx)
its a great set up I will admit. but I don't think it is supported in Windows 10.
http://mackie.com/live/onyx-driver-compatibility

on this page for Onyx driver compatibility it says the: Onyx FireWire Option Card
only has Driver support for windows 7 (not windows 8 or windows 10)
This just may be the problem.

this doesn't mean you Onyx wont work, it just means it may run in to issues and that's what be the problem now.
is it possible you just recently updated to Windows 10 and haven't really Exported yet, or did you Export on Windows 10 previously without a problem ?
What ever the case, we are close to getting you in flight Rich.

I did a piece last December with some recorded sax parts that I did and it worked fine. I installed Windows 10 last summer. I also did the same piece in the 60 day trial of Sonar Platinum as a new mix with the same wav files in late February. That was the last time I really exported any sound files using Sonar. So, I believe the answer is yes, I have used the Mackie Onyx in Windows 10 both in Sonar X3 and Platinum but not a lot. The issue may have been precipitated by Sonar Platinum Trial or it may have even come from the new graphics card being added to the computer.
The soundcard interface guit working after I tested it in Sonar X3 today. A system shutdown and restart did get the interface back and recognized by the Device Manager. I have a strong feeling that the issue maybe a failing soundcard that will eventually not work at all. This is the second Onyx Firewire I have had in the 1640 mixer. The first one died to after about 6 years of use (and after warranty, naturally) the second card was a friendly gift from Mackie support (minus shipping and handling :-)  ) since the system was no longer being made and they told me there were no more of those interfaces to be found at Mackie. I have seen them on eBay but they are still asking a high price for used ones with no guarantee they will last very long (the cards have to be as old as my last card that I got in 2010).

I have tried other mixes tonight and they are still working as exports and the sound card at the moment seems stable. I just hate to think of going out and spending another $grand on a new setup. (sigh)

I hear ya, soundcards are not cheap (well for a good one anyway)

I have 3 soundcards that do a job all to their own.

1- Focusrite 18I8 The Mic Pres is outstanding and 4 of them helps.
its USB2 and I have never had a problem with it. consistency is big in my studio.
This my everyday AI. It was 350 USA currency.

2- Cakewalk VS 20 for mobile applications and something does not color the sound.
it has 8 faders, a master volume, REC buttons for each track, The Play-Stop-Rec-Rew-FF buttons.
those can be bought cheap used(150.00)

3- Mackie Pro FX16 it uses a USB to capture all channels.
this works well with soundboard mixes, drums, multi channel bus mixes to all one channel.

The mic pres is important for using vocals and such.
however if your only doing midi then a smaller AI will be even cheaper. (100.00 bucks)
as important as the PC and software is to us (Songwriters/Producers - doing what we do),
To me, my opinion is the soundcard is most important of all our tools.
Mic pres is everything, unless you have outboard gear doing that for you (Microphone Tube Pre Amps).
Digital converters is also a big part of it.

Firewire seems to becoming used less and less. being replaced by USB3 and Thunderbolt.
But for what its worth, I would continue using the Onyx with the Firewire card until it totally bits the shed.

Good Luck Richard

That's a good line, I'll have to remember it. I am going hang on and hope it doesn't totally crash and burn. The Mic preamps and EQ on the Mackie Mixer would be missed as well. It is a good setup with good AD/DA converters on the firewire soundcard. But the mixer by itself would not work well going into a sound card that doesn't match its 18 outs (16 channels and 2 mains). I am spoiled.

I just wanted to update everyone on my Sonar X3 crashes.

This weekend, I pulled the Mackie Onyx firewire card and put in my old MotU 2408 mkII. It was a weekend project with a lot of cable swapping and changing, Naturally, it was one of the hottest and most humid weekends we have had all summer and crawling behind my sound system rack was not fun. But, it got changed and the software update for MotU equipment work fine on my legacy audio interface. I now have recorded  live into the system and mixed down a piece that I was working on last week without a hitch. If would like to hear the piece, it is at Soundcloud at this address:

Thanks for all the excellent and patient help from all of you! It was greatly appreciated.

Might want to change your thread title.

Sonar 3 implies the version released 13 years ago.

Only taking the time to read through posts is one aware that you are actually using X3.
