  • iLok2 Question for East West use

Hi - I am contemplating starting up the free 10-day trial of the East West pay per-month offer they have, and I have never dealt with anything that used iLok or iLok2 before.

East West's offer indicates I can choose to either use an embedded key on my computer, OR I can store the license authorization on an iLok/iLok2 device.

My long-term goal would be to pick up an iLok2 USB dongle and then I could access the East-West instruments on any one of my 3 computers by plugging the iLok2 into whichever one I wanted to use at that moment.

It will take a few days for an ordered iLok2 to get delivered to me, and I would really like to start playing with East West instruments today, so: If I start the free trial today and tell it to store the key locally on a single computer, can I LATER change the authorization protocol to use the iLok2 instead of the locally-stored key ? (once the iLok2 device arrives)

The short answer is "yes". You can move the PC authorization back to the cloud and then on to the iLok.

I think you are fortunate that EW offers both choices. I never got the physical iLok to work reliably on my system, so I'm unable to use the Slate Digital plugins I've paid for. Sucks. But UVI, Softube and others offer both choices. So, if you have trouble with the physical iLok, at least you can still use what you've purchased on your main DAW.

FWIW, Composer's Cloud doesn't work with with original iLok.
It needs iLok2

In addition, EWCC is great and you can move your iLok2 around, but I gave up my subscription after 4 months because I was sick and tired of having to contact Soundsonline and EW every month when my licence expired and never got renewed. Despite autorenewal it never did it.

Was this the original iLok or iLok2 you had trouble with?

I must have fifteen items that are on an iLok2.  It's been almost two years, and never had one lick of trouble.

iLok2.

On a Dell XPS 8500 with 6 USB2 ports and 4 USB3 ports. WAY too many "USB device failure" messages. I managed to get it to connect ONCE on Win10 and was able to move the licenses on it back to the cloud.

When the iLok works, it works great. When it doesn't work, there is NO help, NONE whatsoever. Not from PACE. Not from Slate Digital. Not from anybody. I never received a single reply to contact attempts of both organizations. PACE, I hate. I've been dealing with them since the LPT port dongles (I had 3 at one point, plugged into each other and then connected to my printer; I was always having to juggle the order of the plugs (they all wanted to be first)). But Slate Digital? Not a single response? They will never get another dime of my money. I need to sell my Slate plugs.

Honestly, I belive it is a Slate-specific problem. I have loads of stuff on my iLok2 and only Slate's stuff ever gives me a problem. Usually, it's the "please insert a iLok2 containing..." message. Closing and reopening the project usually fixes it, but it's getting to be where I'm no longer using Slate stuff on new projects.

Sorry, but it's definitely a PC problem; it has nothing to do with Slate. When I got a message of the type you mention, and inserted the iLok2, WINDOWS immediately failed the USB device; it never got registered as an active, valid USB device. The failure was completely unrelated to whichever app/plugin wanted it for authorization.

So, I repeat again: MAKE SURE YOU CAN GET A REFUND IF YOU CAN'T GET THE ILOK2 TO RUN ON YOUR PC AND YOU AREN'T PERMITTED TO USE COMPUTER AUTHORIZATION...LIKE SLATE DIGITAL.

FWIW, I have my iLok2 on a powered USB2 hub.  It's got 10 ports, and cost around $30. There are cheaper hubs out there, but I wanted something robust that would provide steady power, so I went for a unit that was in the mid range, price-wise  (My e-licenser is on there as well).  I've been using it for about two years, and I can't remember the last time I had a problem with either dongle.

I only mention this because I believe that a lot of the USB-related problems we see here are due to ports not providing adequate power.  (That's also why I use a PCIe add-on USB card for my USB2 interface). It's been smooth-sailing there as well.
