Whenever I double click a track land and go into piano roll, I can see the notes in that lane. I can take away notes in that lane only but when I draw new notes, it doesn't just add them to that lane when I have multiple lanes.

No, the Piano Roll doesn't provide any functions for working with Take Lanes. However, you can use the Inline Piano Roll in the Track view to add notes to individual Take Lanes. Just set the Take Lane's Edit Filter to Notes. Then you can add/edit notes in each lane separately.

I tried this but the behavior is erratic as hell.  Notes don't draw as expected, they don't extend when pulled longer, just a buggy mess!

sounds like you may not have snap settings set to the correct note value you want.

Are you sure? It seems that any notes added to the Inline PRV are added to the first Take Lane that was created, regardless of whether a Take Lane's status is set to notes or clips.
 
What I'd recommend to the OP is using separate tracks instead of Take Lanes. You can view multiple tracks in a single PRV at the same time, as well as hide or show individual tracks for editing with the PRV. So for example if you were doing kick on Track 1, snare on Track 2, and hi-hat on Track 3, you can see all three at once in the PRV. Then if you want to edit only the Kick, you'd select Track 1 as the track for editing, and make your edits while still seeing what's in the other tracks.

Craig, note that Garrigus' response is 2.5 years old. And he doesn't generally note when a feature doesn't work as expected. I already mentioned in RedSky's earlier thread on the topic that results tend to be inconsistent. The only reliable way to get new notes into a particular clip when using lanes is to move it to its own track (if only temporarily).

I originally had all my different hats in different tracks but it seemed as if LANES' purpose was to order thing a bit by keeping similar instruments together for ease of use...  Will have to split them out and do away completely with LANES. It just seems like a pointless feature now...

Track Folders are what I use to keep similar tracks together, especially because I can hide/show things easily to reduce clutter. Lanes are designed for doing different takes of the same instrument, and specifically, IMHO they're optimized for audio comping. However I do use Lanes sometimes for situations like massed vocals, as described in Week 44 for Friday's Tip of the Week.
 
I should also add that you can move tracks into Takes Lanes strictly for organizational purposes if you prefer, and vice-versa.
