I agree that would be the most convenient/logical behavior, but for whatever reason the design decision was made years and years ago that a clip starts with an event.

Hm.... works correctly in X2 for me, I could not reproduce using the same sequence as in Platinum early this day.
Can someone check and confirm that that is a regression?

Interesting. I remembered clips as working this way in early versions of SONAR, it tripped me up which is why I noticed it.

Sorry, I no longer have pre-2015 versions installed.

@azslow3
I was able to confirm the behavior you see in Sonar X2.

I tested drag and drop copy with the Options > Drag and Drop Options... > "Copy the Entire Clips as linked clips" checked in Sonar X1d, Sonar X2a, Sonar X3e and Platinum 2016.07.

Results:
Sonar X1d updated the linked clips as expected with no horizontal movement of the MIDI notes.  [PASSED]
Sonar X2a updated the linked clips as expected with no horizontal movement of the MIDI notes. [PASSED]
Sonar X3e moved the MIDI notes horizontally to the start of the linked clips.  [FAILED]
Platinum 2016.07 moved the MIDI notes horizontally to the start of the linked clips.  [FAILED]

Conclusion:
The behavior of drag and drop copy creating linked clips changed between Sonar X2a and Sonar X3e.

Hope this helps,

Very helpful.

Thanks Ron,
My X2 and Platinum are on different locations at the moment, I was not sure I have not done something wrong.

So, we have confirmed regression. Does someone knows how we can add this information to the bug report on the first page? I can not even open it (I mean the system shows me my own reports only). But I guess OP can do that.

I have read Craig's explanation.  However, I have to agree with the OP.  What I would intuitively expect is that selecting a MIDI clip and copying it as linked would copy the entire "MIDI clip box" from the track view and not just the sub-range that has MIDI data.  I would expect that SONAR would define the MIDI clip boundaries as where they are shown visually on the screen.

Craig, also I think that your explanation doesn't totally cover the behavior.  For example, if SONAR only pays attention to the portion that has MIDI data, then why doesn't it paste the copies as only that data?  So in this example, when the OP pastes the MIDI clip, there shouldn't be the little gap between the beginning of the MIDI clip and the first note. . . the first note should start right on the measure.

Yes, which is why I considered it an awkward design rather than a bug because if you assume that SONAR considers the first piece of data the start of a clip, the three ways I described of doing what the OP wanted to do make total sense - as borne out by what happens when you offset the start time in the Paste Special box. But apparently, these do what's desired by coincidence more than anything else.

Craig, also I think that your explanation doesn't totally cover the behavior.  For example, if SONAR only pays attention to the portion that has MIDI data, then why doesn't it paste the copies as only that data?  So for example, if the MIDI clip shows as 2 bars but there's only notes in measure 2, then subsequent copies of that clip should only be one measure.  But in the OP's example, they are pasted at the length of the entire clip.

Well I guess to me SONAR X3 is "years and years ago" ...but I distinctly remember ends of clips being truncated to the end of notes under Paste Special conditions, and it also happened when testing out the various options for this behavior.

One thing I didn't mention was that I tried to replicate some of the behavior that icontakt reported but I couldn't, and things worked as expected. I figured that would just muddy the waters to bring it up, and there was something either unique about the project or my workflow that made the transposition work as expected.

In any event...until there's a change, at least there are now three workarounds to do what you want . But also, weren't there a lot of MIDI engine changes in X3? I dunno...past a certain point the versions kind of blur together.

I usually use groove clips so I actually haven't experienced what the OP is dealing with.  Glad he posted so if I do encounter that in the future, I won't be tearing my hair out trying to figure out what's going on.

I have joined the thread primary to prevent "fix" with "Paste" no longer follow "Paste speciall...", because that is a feature for me
