  • Win 10, V1803 Changes Default Audio Device

I didn't post this in the Computer section as its more general information.

I use my PC for both general use and for my home recording studio.  Prior to new Windows 10 V1803 (Spring Creators Upgrade)  I could have my recording interface connected (its an MOTU 896Mk3 Hybrid with ASIO) and also my regular PC audio (Realtek) and the PC Audio "Speakers" would remain as the default audio playback device.  Thus I could use the MOTU unit with Cakewalk and my studio monitor speakers and the PC audio/speakers with other audio devices.  I could do a mixdown and master the recording project In Sonar, then export it to a wav file on the PC.  I could then import that wav file to Goldwave (for example) audio editor program, play the wav file and it would playback on the PC audio/speakers and allow hearing how the wav file sounded on PC speakers (for comparison).

Now, with V1803 it automatically makes the MOTU unit the default playback device (when its connected).  I have to manually change the default audio playback device to the PC Speakers when I want to hear how it sounds on the PC speakers.

Those that do what I do or similar should be aware of this change.

I read that a lot of Cake people were having problems with 1803 with drivers etc. I was a bit worried about updating yesterday, but went ahead and haven't noticed any problems yet.

One thing that is worth noting though, and this might be what you need to fix your issue, is that they updated the audio settings so that you can now asign different audio devices to different software/activities. If you right click on the volume icon and go to "Open sound settings" you can select your default device. But if you scroll down to "Other sound options" you have "App volume and device preferences". I believe this can be used to select which device certain apps will use. You may have to have Cake and the editor running for them to show up there. I haven't played about with it yet, but it could fix your issue.

I got an update to my DAW last night, but it is this one: May 8, 2018—KB4103727 (OS Build 16299.431), Applies to: Windows 10 version 1709.

Does that mean I am still going to get the Updates for Windows 10 version 1803? Oh shucks I bet it is...

I see that KB4103721 (OS Build 17134.48) Updates for Windows 10 version 1803 is still pending, When your device becomes eligible for the Windows 10 April 2018 Update...

Rats I thought it was over, woke up to a windows is configuring...100% complete. Then soon able to login which gave a total grey screen with small writing, "Personalized settings, not responding", eventually gave a windows didn't load correctly so restart, then bsod death, then restart and nearly 2 hours later (audio all gone, etc), able to  login. This was a fairly good response to a windows update, the worst was the autumn update which took over my pc for three days. My pc is now a few months old and is getting very sick of Microsoft.

I looked at that panel but I don't think it applies to this particular issue.  There is a later Win 10 version in the works and they are going to make more sound options available.  Maybe something in that version will apply.  I posted this on the tenforums.com and lots of people have looked at it but no responses.  Some knowledgeable people on that forum.

I too have been having a bad go around with the last Microsoft update.
I still run Win 7 on my main DAW (Intel Based) , but have been using Win 10 on my AMD system.
Win 10 trashed my 250G SSD (please insert system disk moment) on my AMD, my backup drive went down as well after boot up and it tried to reboot due to the update

So I took my 3rd back up drive, it was fine until the same update, then again, another trashed SSD.
In my frustration I had 3 other older Win 7 (AMD) backup SSDs. They all worked fine on the AMD. All rebooted with no problems, all evening long and day 2 went well.

So I lost my 3 of my Win 10 AMD backups. I just so happened to have an older win 10 i7(intel) with a back up disk image. That booted up on my AMD so I tweaked some settings and moved on. I made 3 other disks image backups late last night, they all now boot up Win 10.
So, I don`t know yet if they too will get trashed once the update hits them.

On my win 7 (Intel based) PC , after a Win 7 update about 5 days ago, my MOTU Ultralite III interface only works in SPDIF in my Win7 environment?
Dang, all this extra down time gets frustrating!

I am being very cautious moving on, I am about to pull the internet plug on any DAWs I use.
Seems like anytime more than 15 minutes into using Win 10, here come those dang updates again. Even though I thought they were turned off.
I normally don`t complain, but 3 similar updates all trashing 3 of my backup boot disks on the AMD.

Last night my wife`s PC (i7 Intel), took multiple reboots to adjust windows settings with her machine.  (there were errors about "cannot find preferences settings"). We woke up this morning an noticed more additional re-boots were occurring.

This all sounds like it belongs in the computer forums, but this Win update seems so destructive. Beware - - -

Yes, it hosed my Boss GT 100 set up (I uninstalled, re-installed drivers, plus Tone Central but the latter will not connect) and also, to a lesser degree, it hosed ExpressVPN (and even support are stumped here).

The resulting MS KB fix didn't do anything, but I have a theory - I think its limited to W10 Pro.

My laptop with W10 Home, updated perfectly and both the GT 100 and Express VPN work perfectly. Go figure !

If anyone has any tips, for the GT 100 they are more than welcome.

Cheers,
Jerry

I had to unplug my Focusrite and plug it back in.  That was all.

Surprise.  I just got the updated Windows Insider program Win 10 release.  V1803, OS Build 17666.1000.
The Windows sound playback device assignment has returned to pre V1803.  The problem of the recording interface unit being assigned the Windows audio playback device has been resolved.  However, who knows how long this will be before its released to the regular versions of Windows 10 (maybe the next Fall upgrade?) or if some future OS Build will revert back to how the regular versions of Windows 10 is now.
