Craig?  Got any ideas for me?  I put in a help request but I need to work tonight.  Wouldn't have done this in the middle of two projects, but the M$ deadline gave me no choice.  :-/

C'mon guys, the cost to upgrade to Windows 10 Home from Vista is $119.00 right now. The chances of that price going up after July 29, 2016 are, methinks, pretty slim. So, you have a perfectly functioning Windows 7 DAW that you are perfectly comfortable with, and you risk mucking it up (especially at the last minute) because....OMG!! OMG!!....it's FREE??!!

Why throw away $119 when you can get it for free?  I hope you are not a financial adviser.

I haven't upgraded to Win10 yet either, but I'd also like to avoid paying $120 down the road.

And I hope you're not a reading coach.
Try actually reading everything I wrote. Free is great if, among other things (a) There is no chance of screwing up your current work situation, (b) The free item is usually ridiculously expensive, (c) The free item is critical to your workflow - without it, you can't work, (d) The free item is not critical to your workflow, but you have time to work out any unforeseen kinks in using the free item without interrupting your workflow.

If paying $119.00 for your OS is throwing away money... well..... OK. And, any good financial advisor will tell you that rushing into any investment/investment service without the proper planning, and without regard for current circumstances and potential negative outcomes, is not a prudent move, even if the investment/investment service is "free". In the OP's case, his decision caused him some consternation and interrupted his workflow. Others have found themselves in a similar situation. I hope the OP followed the advice of some, and backed up/cloned his W7 HDD.

As for you, since waiting is such horrific advise, worthy of snide remarks, why haven't you upgraded?/ What are you waiting for?? Jump.....

So, an interesting wrinkle I discovered... if I start Sonar with "run as administrator" it runs with my license.  I had to modify the properties for the .exe itself (Compatibility | run as admin) to make it "permanent" for the shortcuts.

Unless some other weirdness shows up, this seems to have solved the most annoying part of this upgrade.  Still haven't heard from support.  Tried to schedule a call, but all the appointments were full.

I do appreciate the debate you guys are having.  I truly have been on both sides of it for the past few months.  At the moment, now that this is solved (?) I think I'll continue on W10, in part because I spent about 2 hours last night (between 2am and 3am) optimizing my settings for audio and deleting all that fluff they include in W10 for phones, store apps, and such junk.

It may be my imagination, but I think the audio engine is running better in W10 than it did in Win7.  I've got some HUGE orchestra/choir/band projects (with associated video) that gave me some trouble before and I'm hoping to give them a revisit tomorrow and finally finish them.

Thanks, everybody.

thom,

I am seriously glad it is coming together for you.  As I said before, you took the leap, now make the best of it! Others have reported some gains in performance since switching to W10 - hopefully that pans out for you too.

Good luck with your projects!

I'm trying Win 10 for the 7th time, and so far Sonar is still working.
Hopefully whatever has been causing Sonar.exe to stop working has been fixed. Fingers crossed.
