Hi

I am considering upgrading me i3 chip to an i7...  but was wondering if there's such a website that checks compatibility..

My board is  a Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H

I don't know of a web site that checks compatibility but the Gigabyte page shows this:

"Supports Intel Core™ i7/ Core™ i5/ Core™ i3 LGA1156 processors"

So an I7 will work but it has to be a processor with an LGA1156 socket.

That would be the "Lynnfield" series of I7.

Look here for the "Lynnfield" I7:

Update:
I did your homework for you:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gah55mud2h

Go to that page and Scroll down to "View Compatible CPUs" to see a list of CPUs good for your MB.

careful though, some of your vsts might count that as an activation

As a change in computer specs?

yup, NI is a good example, cant even change the number of cores used without causing the vst to go into demo mode- either use an activation or switch it back

Yoiks!

Socket 1156 is ancient.  My MOBO is a socket 1155 jobbie and that's really old.  1156 predates that.  Current socket is 1151, prior to that it was 1150.  I have been able to spot some socket 1155 CPUs in the wild, but they're still pretty expensive.

My honest advice would be to get a new MOBO and upgrade the CPU to a modern socket 1151 variant.

Agree.
The Lynnfield processor is the 1st generation I7. We are at generation 6 now.
It would be best to save up money and get a new motherboard/processor combo.

Ok... thanks for the tip.

My intention is to use this computer as my main computer then use it as a VEpro Slave ... once I can afford a brand new rig.....   (Wife might have something to say about this though!)
