  • Midi, right mouse button: Sometimes note properties, sometimes note just disappears

I am trying to get the hang of MIDI editing.

The puzzle I am having is that sometimes when I right-click on a note I get the properties, like in Sonar 8.5.3, but sometimes the note just disappears. Gone.

Anyone else have this happen to them?
I am sure I saw a similar thread some time back but I cannot find it.

Pay attention to what editing "tool" is engaged.  There are 6 of them.  Go through each one with some practice notes and see what each one does and doesn't do.

@Thedoccal: Something strange is happening.
If I select a tool, and then select it again, a different tool gets selected.
I think my Sonar installation is screwed up.

How are you selecting the tool?

Some tools have more than one tool within the tool.  If you use your keyboard hotkeys, pressing the same one toggles through the available tools.  That's why they change.  Fun huh!?  If you use the mouse to change tools (left click only) the tool will stick with the one tool within the tool.  Right click with the mouse to see the list of tools available within that tool, if there are any.

Oh! F5, F6 and F7 work differently from F8, F9 and F10!!!

If I choose F6 for the select tool, then do some work, then without thinking I later press F6 again, it jumps back to whatever tool I had before I chose F6! (Assuming I even remember what it was...)

And if I choose one of the F8 - F10 key functions, pressing the same F-key again makes them loop through like you described.

Phew, this calls for serious concentration.

In Sonar 8 there are only the S(elect), D(raw) and E(rease) keys.
I find what you can do with each one is more balanced and consistent.

Despite several people decrying the nature of the Smart Tool, most of their objections stem from not using it properly, IMHO of course.

It is indeed very Smart indeed to the point where I don't use any of  the standard tools, just a few of the other more exotic variations

The SmartTool is fine for when there are few notes, but when there's lots of notes and I am zoomed out it gets difficult to position the cursor over specific regions of individual notes.

This is when the single-function tools are useful.

I find I have to break concentration to double-check which tool is active before I press a button. Especially the Draw tool (F9). Hit this one a second time by accident and you can then press another 6 times to get it to cycle through all it's 7 functions before it returns to the one you wanted.

This really is distracting me from the music-making.
I am posting a feature request to simplify this.

Right-click on the button, choose the tool. Pretty simple.

That's using the mouse.
We were talking about behavior when using the F-keys.
