Hi all,

I'm getting latency playing all my softsynths in Sonar X2 Producer and it's getting quite frustrating.

Can anyone offer any suggestions, please? I know that's not a lot to go on so please let me know if you'd like further info.

My current Mixing Latency settings (because it won't let me add a screenshot...):
Buffers in Playback Queue: 2
Buffer Size: Fast/441 samples
Effective latency at 44kHz/stereo: 10.0 msec

Thanks!

Hi. Which driver mode do you use, and are the drivers (and the rest of your pc) up to date? If possible, use ASIO drivers.
10 ms RTL (round trip latency) should not be a significant problem. But if it is 10 ms "each way", you will feel it as being out of sync.
Do you have the possibility to lower the latency?
All the best.

Could there be other plug-ins in the project adding latency? Type "E" or click the FX button in the Mix Module. This will bypass all FX plug-ins and recalculate the PDC.

A roundtrip latency of 10 ms should, IMO, be quite tolerable in most cases (I have much higher). In many cases, though, the actual latency is much higher than the what the settings indicate, due to many reasons, usually VST-dependant ones.
Then again, latency should not be a problem when mixing, anyway (as you talk about mixing latency).
Do you use different settings when recording?

If what your experiencing is  playing a note on your controller and it takes time to sound, then what scook said is the solution.
Round trip latency has nothing to do with midi latency.
RTL is experienced when you play your guitar and use input echo to monitor.

When using software synths you still feel the effect of the "outgoing" latency, which is typically around half of the round-trip. Plugins that add latency of theirnown will increase the delay between pressing a key and a note sounding, but removing those plugins won't reduce the latency the audio driver buffer is set to provide.

I guess this would be true when you think about it, because there must be a delay from when the midi message triggers the soft synth then the CPU/ system needs to generate the sound, then the audio driver is involved in the playback and the D/A too. ,,  I wonder why  I've had the RTL as high as 45 ms but I never have a problem with midi latency that was noticeable unless I'm running a effect like the LP64 multiband ? I certainly notice the 10ms delay if I run a Guitar sim?

I don't know. I can cope with higher latency with some software synths than I can with guitar or bass as well.

Maybe it has to do with attack envelope settings, I find piano and similar sounds are also affected by latency in the same way as guitar.

And some hardware synths can take 7 or 8ms to interpret and process MIDI and emit audio as well, especially if they're digital.

Thanks for your replies, everyone.

My experience is regarding playing notes on my MIDI controller (a Yamaha S90XS). The latency isn't huge but it's enough to affect live playing, especially when playing/recording a drum part in realtime.

I tried pressing E but no change yet.

Driver mode is currently set to to WDM/KS. I recall having problems with ASIO settings in the past for some reason but I could try it again I guess.

The latency is currently set to Fast and the slider is all the way to the left (in the Preferences | Driver Settings window).

Should I adjust the buffer size? I'm not exactly sure what that does.

Or perhaps it's an issue with my controller?

Thanks,
CK
