  • How to show number of samples within the length of a selection?

I couldn't find the answer to this in the documentation, or a search of the knowledge base and forum.  When I use the select tool to select a portion of an audio clip, I'd like to see the number of samples within the length of the selection.  Is there a way in Sonar Platinum to display this?
Thanks.

There may be a simpler way to do this, but...

1. Open the Inspector Clip tab and for Time Format, choose Samples.
2. While holding the Alt key, click and drag across the selection you want to measure. This creates a clip out of the selection.
3. Click on the Clip handle to select it, then read the length in Samples in the Clip Inspector's Length field.
4. Choose Undo to undo the split.

Thanks Craig.  That works, but is kind of cumbersome.  It seems that there should be an easier way to measure a selection precisely.

It takes about the same amount of time as opening Sound Forge or Audition from the Tools menu and using their capabilities. Digital audio editing software is much more concerned about precise sample lengths of files compared to multitrack recording software.

However I do have a way to "cheat" in SONAR when I need to do sample-accurate loops. The loops end up starting at the beginning of the project anyway, so I just set the transport time counter to samples, snap the Now time to the end of the clip, and see the length in the transport.

I guess I'm used to using Pro Tools where it is shown clearly under the timeline display.  I use a Windows PC with Sonar at home and will have to adapt.

I was looking for this answer and I agree that we should just be able to make a selection and the length show up somewhere automagically. That's design 101.

I've created a feature request. Please vote up?
