  • Nightmare scenario....

Hi guys,
Well I've encountered a nightmare scenario, Last night, working on a mix, the T.V. I use as a pc monitor began sparking and went off, I then couldn't use my pc with a normal pc monitor, Brought it to the guy in the pc repair shop and he said either the graphics card is gone or the motherboard, either way I will get my pc back with nothing on it, i.e. no Sonar, no Plugins, no Addictive drums 2. It's a bit of a bummer as the machine also had X3 installed and I'm not sure if I'll lose stuff from that.
Anyhow, I presume I will have to do a fresh install of everything, but I'm worried about a few things like Addictive drums and my Slate plugs, I have my Ilock2 and I imagine that's ok.
Has anyone got any advice about how I should re-install everything when I get the pc back, Talking to the guy he told me that if the motherboard is gone it will have a new I.D. not sure if this will cause problems.
Any help appreciated,
Andrew

Had probs like that ca 2 years back.
Not a big problem other than a complete reinstall,
which is in my case much work.
Had no problems to install all of my plugins
with a new system ID, most brands offer multiple
registrations authorizations aso.
But this scenario was a reminder for me to
do back ups reguarly , cause I lost  one of my best songs.
And  I lok 2 worked flawless.
If you haven´t already done so, it´s the chance to upgrade to
Win 10.

Install oldest version(s) first.

With AD you'll have to go on their website, "unregister" your old pc and register the new one.

downloading, reinstalling and reactivating software is the easy part. I would be more concerned about the project files, recordings, accumulated samples and custom presets that are gone for good assuming you did not have multiple internal/external hard drives...

I am confused by the OP. Did you try the internal drive(s) in another machine yet? That specific "lost everything" is highly questionable. If an SSD, then it is possible, but a HDD is unlikely even if it toasted the controller card (magnetic media actually must be written to to erase it).

Yah I'm with Metteius. Even if it was the motherboard there's a chance the drives are intact, which means you can replace some core components and be back up and running.

I would honestly go straight to another repair shop for both such a vague diagnosis "either the graphics card or the motherboard" and such severe measures (giving the PC back with nothing on it).
Neither are reasonable from a paid service by professionals.

Sorry guys I wasn't that clear in my original post. I didn't lose any projects, samples or files. Just all my installed software will be gone. Gonna be a days work reinstalling everything. Thanks for the replies.

OK - MUCH better picture painted with the improved clarity on the situation.

I was about to launch into complete concurrence with those above who advised that your data files were most likely recoverable.

Never mind......

Anything connected to your Cakewalk account should be able to be downloaded and installed again, as should most any plugin you bought from any place where you had to create an account.

There may be some process of transfer from the old PC's unique ID to the new one, but that shouldn't be much more than annoying to go through for a day or 2 to get sorted out.

VERY happy your project files and personal data have survived.

The other thing I would question is what had happened that fried both your TV and your motherboard (IF both are indeed toast).  I am HOPING you have some sort of surge protection on a power strip, otherwise something would seem really wrong with the electrical situation.  I would DEFINITELY have a look at what could fry multiple components like that. (again, IF motherboard too is gone).

Is there any chance you have either extended warranties on the TV and possibly the motherboard, OR are either covered under the manufacturer's warranty?

Hi, Thanks. I have everything surge protected but I think something shorted on the tv's board and it damaged the pc through the hdmi cable. I won't know for a few days what's wrong with the pc. Hoping its not the motherboard. A clean reinstallation of all my software is gonna be a pain in the arse
