  • Projects double in size after using melodyne.

Hey folks.

I have just noticed something quirky. I edited a series of small projects last night. They are a mixture of midi and audio tracks (Approx 8 audio tracks with fx + 4 midi tracks, no vsti). All I did was insert melodyne studio on two of the audio tracks as a region effect (one was mono, one stereo), alter the pitch by 1 semitone, then use the right click menu to render melodyne to make the changes permanent. Upon saving, the projects themselves (not the audio data) had doubled in size despite having exactly the same track count.

I just wondered whether this is normal, or is there something I am not doing to remove the melodyne region fx permanently?

This is certainly not an issue on these small projects, but may prove problematic on larger projects. They are used for a live show and need to load efficiently in the playlist whilst another song is playing without glitching.

Thanks!

Adding melodyne to longer audio tracks will increase the size of the project because the ARA document archives are included within the CWP file. This stores the analysis data from melodyne.
If you render the melodyne clips the size should return to normal.

Thanks for the response Noel. The melodyne clips were rendered before the files were saved in each case, but the file size still doubled. The projects were never saved with any instance of melodyne still in place.

what I typically do after using ARA / Melodyne is right click on the area, bounce to clips.
once im confident the edits are pure and clean (and to my liking). I bounce the whole track (bounce to clips).
I then use the Clean Audio folder tool in utilities to purge the folder of any unused data.
this should help consolidate your project size.

Hmm are you sure that you rendered (not freeze) the melodyne clips? Freeze will still keep the original clips.
Also check if there are any audio snap clips in the project since the markers can increase file size.
See if you can replicate file size growing in a simple project with one melodyne clip (after you render it).

Hi Noel. I seem to be able to reproduce the issue with a new file.  Here's what I am doing:

1. Create a new empty project.
2. Create audio track and import a single stereo track (2min 48 secs).
3. Save the project as Test 1 (File size - 109kb)
4. Right click on track wave picture and chose region FX > Melodyne>create region FX
5. In the melodyne window, choose Edit > Select all,  then in the selected note box enter the transposition amount (-2)
6. Right click on the track wave picture and choose Region FX > melodyne> render region FX
7. Choose File > Save As > Test 2 (File Size - 818kb)

I repeated the above steps a third time and the file size increased to 1542kb.

Thanks Chuck - that sounds like a good plan to to keep the audio folder tidy.

Happy 4th to you too:)

tenfoot, just as an experiment, open the file, select the clip, right click and choose Bounce to Clips.

Save as to a new folder and look at the filesize

Thanks for the suggestin Bristol Jonesey. Gave it a try - same result.

It seems to happen on the first save no matter what. If you close the project and reopen after the first save, you can avoid it continuing to double in size with consecutive 'save as'.
Not a huge deal.
