That you had the problem running Sonar was a hint at temperature. When you work the processor, it shutdown. A game would probably have done the same.

Heat was the apparent cause in this case, but its not the only thing.  If one of the cores had a problem unless that core was used it would not show up.  Running an app such as Sonar that can use all the cores would cause the problem.  Gaming is another.
 
In my case Core 2 was the cause as reported by Intel after they received and evaluated the CPU (it happened with anything, not just a CPU intensive app).
 

Damn!!! I just got another blue screen.  this time the error was PROCESS_HAS_LOCKED_PAGES.  i WASN'T RUNNING SONAR OR ANYTHING.   hmmm
    I ran the intel test again and it passed everything...I looked at the event viewer in computer management and it still called it a Event ID 41 Kernel-Power error

The ID41 Kernel Power error is generated whenever it shuts down because of some error.  Doesn't really mean much.
The problem, doing searches, turns up multiple possibilities, everything from a driver to the OS to BIOS, etc.  Not much help.   

I did some more checking, and two additional items, memory and corruption in Windows.   
Several hits for the PROCESS_HAS_LOCKED_PAGES error when shutting down or opening full window app.
 
Considering the many "abrupt" shutdowns potentially two items stick out (1) corruption on the hard drive (2) corruption in Windows.  Both of these suggest a "clean" reinstall (reformat the hard drive and reinstall).   I'm sure neither one of these would make you happy if it turns out to be the problem. 
 
Do you have a spare hard drive that you could install and then install Windows on that?  I know its a hassle but would at least eliminate these as potentials.  

Yes I do have a spare.  Or I can get one.  I can back up everything and reinstall .  It wouldn't be the first time.  Ugh.  do you think that it is no longer a hardware problem?  It does pass the intel test everytime now.  the temps are running at least 16 degrees and most of the time 19-20 degrees, below the max.    I am running only one audio driver.  And Hell, it has happened without running sonar a couple times.  

Using a different hard drive and a "clean" Windows install will eliminate hardware if it works OK with the install.  (you don't have to install any other software except device drivers and Win10 should install those during the installation).
 
On the other hand if you still have problems after the clean install that says your OS drive and Win 10 are not to blame and its back to hardware.  
 
Its a hassle but worth doing as it proves where the problem is.  If its hardware it doesn't isolate what hardware is at fault but at least you know that it is something in the hardware (and gut feeling I would suspect the CPU considering the previous problem).
 
 
 
 

Yes.  I shall try that.   cpu's don't go bad very often do they?  
BTW  I still encourage you to try reaper.  you can try it for free and it's only 60 bucks if you (after 60 days) decide you like it.  

Isolating the problem is the name of the game now.  As noted, if after the clean install it works OK or still has problems it points to where the problem is.  If its hardware, sadly not what part of the hardware.  CPU's are probably the last place most look for hardware problems but they do happen.  
 
I had Reaper installed one time so my "free" time is gone.  Looked at it but no further.  As I've spent the $$ on Studio One 3 and the Groove 3 tutorials I'm going to stick with it for now.
 
 

Cool.  I will look into studio one a bit.  Thanks again for your help!!!  I will report back.  I have a brand new OEM copy of windows 10 and a new ss hard drive.   As I recall, my original install on that system was Windows 8.1.  And I then took the free upgrade
