Dear all,

I hope this is the right place to ask this.

I have an Onyx 1640 mixer (not 1640i) that I need to fashion some rack ears (I cannot find these to buy, and the ones that supposedly came with it are missing).

Would 2mm-thick aluminium angle (e.g. https://www.screwfix.com/p/hafele-brushed-aluminium-profile-21-x-25-x-597mm-2-pack/3020p) be strong enough to support it (13.5kg not including the weight of cables that may be attached to it)?

I suspect the 'original' material is steel, which I understand to be stronger than aluminium

(or if anyone has unwanted rack ears for this particular model, make me a reasonable offer? [in the UK].

Many thanks,
Wei Liang

If you can't find ears, maybe something like this will work

How about these? These are for a 1604vlz, but I believe the chassis is the same as a 1640.

I’d just go onto Ebay and do a search for the right sized, or oversized so I could cut it down, angle in steel or stainless steel. Screwfix have a very limited range of metal forms and sheet.

Or even search for a set of the correct rack ears for the mixer. You never know, they may be available or someone somewhere has a set they want to sell or part with.

As for strength, much depends on the design of the ears, the angle of the rack and the total weight to be supported. Mixers and interfaces generally have quite a weight of cable and plugs hanging off them as well as their own weight. 2mm alluminium alloy angle can hold a surprising amount of load, especially if there’s not much overhang and it has plenty of fasteners holding it down to the rack.

Thank you all for your thoughts. BobF's velcro suggestion has inspired a much simpler solution to my problem that will not even require the rack ears. Once again thanks.

M5 bolts and caged nuts are the specialist equipment you require to mount these.
