I am having trouble understanding the logic of what SONAR (Platinum) does regarding hiding and unhiding clips while editing take lanes. All I know is it's not what I want. :)

What I would like to see is what I am used to from Vegas, Sony's (Formerly Sonic Foundry's) video editor. In Vegas (and this was several versions ago - no clue how it works now) say you had several tracks. The track on "top" was always the one you see, unless otherwise specified. This is the behavior I'd like to see in SONAR.

Let's say I am recording a guitar part. I start recording a looped section of a song. I record ten loops and this records as ten take lanes. In this scenario, if I were played perfectly, I would have ten exactly the same takes, each on its own lane. But that's not the case. I messed up in one measure. So I delete that section from the top (active) take lane. What I would like is for the lane below it to be active, or audible -- but ONLY where I cut the part out. You see, what you hear is whatever is on TOP. This way, I can chip away at imperfections, easily revealing whatever's below it.

I'm sure there is some logic to however SONAR does it now. But all I know is I end up frustratingly K-ing clips all over the place to get it to be what I want, which is simply whatever is on "top" is what I hear.

Does this make sense?

I think the best answer is that "it doesn't work that way". The current recommended workflow would let you achieve the same goal but "on top" isn't how you'd do it.

What I'm trying to say is that making take lanes work that way would be counter to the current recommended workflow, which, as it stands, is perfectly capable of allowing you to achieve your goal.

As stickman says, you can achieve what you want very easily, but not in the manner you want it to work. It's not made that way.

Watch some tutorials on comping, give it and honest try and you will be flying through edits and never looking back.

Well - this is the one forum (Features and Ideas) where I think the idea is to encourage enhancements, etc. I personally really like the OP's idea. Voted.

The last thing I want is for Cakewalk to change how every feature currently works based on somebody's familiarity with some other product. This isn't a missing feature; it's one that doesn't work the way the OP expects.

But, by all means, vote away.

Thanks... Now I can stop worrying about whether or not you're ok with it.
