Hey guys, I’m as devastated by the news of Cakewalks demise as anyone. I think I am going to be one of those who will stick with what I have until it’s not compatible further. I’ll start saving money to purchase my next DAW in a year or two. In the meantime Waves has a sell today on the SSL collection for $199. It’s attractive to me 1-to get the bus comp (which is on sale for $29 today only) 2-when ever I go with a new DAW I doubt it will have the pro-channel feature or console emulation, it would be nice to have something that according to almost every review I’ve read is pretty darn close to the real deal, and I’m assuming it’s better than just having “console emulation” because with those and in Cakewalk or Slate you’re not getting the eq, mic pre etc. 3-in the meantime I can enjoy using it in SPLAT as I suspect it’s better then the included emulations.

What are you guys thoughts on the Waves SSL collection? Have you used it or compared it to what’s in SPLAT? Am I just buying into hype and wasting money on this?

Waves' SSL bundle is one of their biggest successes and has been used on countless commercial mixes. When I compared just the E-channel to the Sonar PC equivalent some time ago, the difference was immediately apparent -- much more punch, snap, and analog vibe from Waves. Same goes for the Bus compressor.

Today's deal on the Bus comp is kind of a no-brainer if you want to accumulate the pieces separately. The two channel strips have been at the same price recently, so if you can stand to wait until Waves does the same deal again, you'll save a lot of money over the bundle price.

I like the J37, but I've used it more as a delay than a tape sim -- for the latter task, I think the Black Rooster Magnetite, which also models a J37 machine, wins out. It lacks delay features but sounds better to me as a true tape emulation. Not sure if it's still on sale, but if so, I'd grab that one.
