  • What happened to Cakewalk Pitch Shifter?

I don't use it often, but sometimes if I just need to change the pitch of a (rap) vocal it was a great tool for broad strokes, allowed automation, etc.

Now I can't find it in CbB even among the other Cw and Sonitus plugs.

As far as I can recall Cakewalk Pitch Shifter was a 32 bit DirectX plugin (which won't work in 64 bit Sonar / CbB).

The equivalent is Cakewalk Time/Pitch Stretch 2, but as far as I can tell it can't be automated.

For vocal pitch shifting, take a look at MAutoPitch by Melda Productions, which is free and can be automated.

Ah ok, thanks for the info.  I have the Melda plug, I don't like the way it sounds.  I have melodyne also, but its destructive and takes many clicks to do what I want, although the sound is great.

cheers,

There was a 64bit version of the Cakewalk Pitch Shifter plug-in bundled with SONAR through X2. Run an advanced install of any 64bit SONAR X2 or older to get the plug-in.

Was there an issue with that plug-in that caused it to be discontinued? I've been using a 3rd party plug-in and was frustrated when trying to figure out how to pitch shift a track in CbB. In other DAW's I've used, pitch shifting a track is a pretty straightforward built-in feature and I was surprised not to find it.

X2 is the only version I missed since the DOS days. Apparently that plugin is only in that version. I don't guess I can get it.

If I want to pitch shift a whole mix, I use the 32 bit Splat. If I want to shift just a few instruments in a mix, sometimes I'll use the groove clips method, which works pretty good for single instruments, not a whole mix

Given the age of the plug-in it must have been ported before X2. I do have the X1 User Guide handy and it shows the plug-in without a 32bit only notation. This leads me to believe it was 64bit in X1. My guess is the plug-in was one of the earliest plug-ins to be ported to 64bit well before the X-Series.

I stand corrected... there is a 64 bit version, and it's in X1 too. I can't see any way of automating it though.

Pitch.ax (Pitch Shifter [DX]) is in the 32 & 64 bit Cakewalk/Shared Plugins folder. Mine is dated 2010(32) & 2012(64).

Stretch.ax (Time/Pitch Stretch 2 [VST2]) is in every 32 & 64 bit X series main folder. Oddly, it's help file is in the CbB main folder but not the .ax.

There's no way to automate them directly but you could also use Dimension or Rapture as a plugin and automate it's bend or pitch parameters as described here.

I believe CbB is picking up Stretch.ax from a SONAR installation and BandLab ships the hlp file just in case CbB finds the plug-in.
