I'd avoid an actual upgrade of your hard drive with Win 7 installed, and install 10 on a fresh hard drive. You just need the serial that came with Win 7 and any Win 10 install disc will work for any level of 10, or download an ISO from MS. You can even boot the MS install from a thumb drive, you don't have to burn a disc.

Good point. Although I'd suggest first making sure you have Win 7 backed up to another HD or an image file and then upgrade Win 7 to Win 10. If it all works fine and most of the time it does then you don't' have to install from scratch, which is very time consuming. If it doesn’t work out or you just want to go back to Win 7 to check something you have that other HD or image file to do so.

It's really nice to know that we have that option of installing from scratch. I did make an install CD, because it's important to have it if there are booting problems. Also I did upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 using the install CD instead of the internet method. I felt it was safer.

When I upgraded my Win 8.1 DAW to Win 10 I used the internet method and it worked very good. I had less hoops to jump through than the Win 7 to Win 10 upgrade.

After I DLed the drivers for my hardware and made an image of Win 7 I upgraded to Win 10 with no major problems.  You may have to reactivate a program or two but that is no problem.  I have programs from Win 95, XP and 7 running on Win 10.  Sonar runs perfectly on Win 10.

I have Sonar Platinum running flawlessly on Windows 10.

I did the upgrade from Win7 to Win10 a couple weeks ago and had very few problems - no problems with SONAR that I can remember.  I made a Win7 image first just in case things didn't go well.  I was thinking that I might do a clean install after the upgrade, but things seem to be running so well that I'm forgoing that hassle.  Things seem snappier and I got back about 20G of space after doing disc cleanup.  There have been a few quirks but nothing major with Win 10.  The advantages have far outweighed the disadvantages.  Had a similar pleasant experience on a 2nd laptop not used for SONAR.  Bummer though that we had to give up Windows Media Center but I have a 3rd laptop with that and Win8 serving as my DVR.

Only on SSD? That's just silly - windows 10 runs just fine on a standard HDD.

yes sadly, the excessive telemetry and spying makes system drive coonstantly being read and/or writing data to it, of course it's not a problem to install Windows 10 even on 5400rpm HDD, but honestly if I should go for Windows 10, then I would definitely install it on SSD, to prevent the problems caused by Win10's very bad optimization for non-SSD drives

I'd like to know more about the the excessive telemetry and spying. This is the first I’ve heard about that. It may be happening or it may be other things that are causing the HD's to spin.

With my DAW that I upgraded from Win 8, I have that optimized very well, because i was having some mysterious stability problems for months using Win 8. So I went through all the Cakewalk, Sweetwater, and Black Viper optimizations and stopped a lot of the useless spinning. I now have a very stable DAW and I’m using an SSD boot HD

ON my other internet computer that I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10, I do have some mysterious HD spinning, but I’ve attributed to the quirky Firefox and Windows Live Mail. But now you have me wondering if I need to optimize this internet computer in case it’s something else. ON this computer I have a standard SATA HD. Thanks for the info and any additional light you can shine on this.

I don't think the HD is spinning due to telemetry (i.e. spyware) installed in Windows 10.There must be something else (anti-virus?)
I would however strongly recommend you google "gnu Proprietary Surveillance" and read all the references there -  this will help you protect your system and privacy a bit better.

Hello Rod. The upgrade from 7 to 10 has been flawless for me.

Hello Rod,
I went the route of a "Full Clean Install" and so far it's been two weeks with No problem! I went on the Microsoft site and made a Image file on to a thumb drive, setup the Bio's to boot from the drive and it was a smooth instillation.
The install was on my Samsung SSD and the experience has been great! There was "A Lot" of items that I turned off just so I wouldn't have something "Auto-Load" later or send information to MS so that a Profile could be made for marketing (sharing). I'm coming from Windows 7 and so far, very good results and No problems with Sonar, my system is working great, but of course Win 10 is still new and there will be bugs. A lot of people I know don't like Windows update, so I made that an option if I want to install. No problems with "Drivers", good luck.
