I recently purchased an S-47 microphone kit from microphone-parts.com. Have to say I was very happy with the results.
I was never impressed with my vocal sound on the Rode NT-1 I own. Don't get me wrong, it does a stellar job on female vocals, and sounds awesome on brass parts and as a room mic for acoustic guitar. But it never did sound great on my lower register kind of vocals, too much harsh, brittleness up top that I could never seem to EQ out.
So, after reading their blurb about how the S-47 mic is designed to give more weight to those lower frequencies, and less harshness on the higher ones, I decided to give this mic a try.
The instructions were easy to follow, and I had no trouble with the build from start to finish. There were several options to voice the mic with regards to how the top end was rolled off, and suggestions about what components could be used for an even more defined sound. I went with their standard voicing and this seems to have just the right amount of top end roll off for my vocals.
I was also impressed by the fact this mic is an Omni/Cardioid switchable which makes this mic even more usable. (Even though you have to open the mic body up to make this switch)
Being from Australia, I expected this to take several weeks to be delivered, but was surprised to find it in the mail box after only 4 days. (Wow, impressive)
All in all, a very pleasant experience. Well done Microphone Parts.
