I find myself frequently switching between different zoom levels and I was wondering if there is a way to save them or use a shortcut to go from low to high zoom level quickly... I am sure the screensets can do that but I find them too slow and I don't need everything moved around...

Screen Sets save zoom (and lots of other) information. So if you start on say Screenset 5, and set your screen/zoom as you want, then go to Screnset 6, and make the changes you want, and so on... you can very quickly revert to each zoom level with the number keys (which represent each screenset)

Not exactly what you want, but you can quickly switch back and forth between two zoom levels by right click (hold) on empty space in track view and then left click.
 
To switch forth: Left click (hold) + right click.
