  • Comping Using X2 Take Lanes

I'm having trouble understanding how to comp from several takes using take lanes.

I've read the manual, looked at YouTube tutorials explaining how to comp from X1 layers with the mute tool, etc. But I can't seem to make it happen with X2 Take lanes.

Does anyone know of a good tutorial I might watch? There doesn't seem to be too many around dealing with Take Lanes.

Groove3 has one out there, but it uses takes lanes for automation.

I have 4 bass takes and want to comp one good track from the four takes.

As an example of the problems I'm having:

I can't get the mute tool to do the job, beacuse it seems I can only solo one take lane at a time.

As a side note, Pro Tools for me seems to have one of the best comping systems. Mutiple takes show up in lanes, much like X2, but all I have to do is mouse select parts of each lane I want, hit a "promote" button on the lane, and the selected piece move up to the top lane. Simple, easy, and quick.

I'll assume you've already seen my X1 comping video on youtube (link in sig if not).

There's little difference between comping in X2 and X1, you could only solo one layer at a time in that. I find it easiest to set up a loop and work a section/phrase at a time. I also use the isolate mode of the mute tool. Hold ctrl key down while swipe selecting the take you want to keep.

Why do you need to solo more than one at a time doesn't that defeat the object? Surely you want to isolate each take as you listen to it not have it mixed with another one.

Isolate mode of mute tool? I'll have to try that. I've used the mute tool before how does the "Isolate" mode work? When you say swipe select do you mean with the mute tool? Is it anything like my missed broken overlap mute tool?

Did you try moving the 1 good take lane to a new track?
Hope that helps.

Hold down the ctrl key and click drag sweep/swipe the area of the take lane you want to keep. All other takes in that region will be muted leaving the one you swiped as the audible one.

It's a great way to comp. See video here

Thanks. I'll take a look at the video and give it a try.

Well I tried that and it works.

I wish there was a way to adjust the ends of the selection of what you soloed though. It seems that if you don't make an accurate selection on the first mouse drag, it's impossible to adjust. If you could zoom in adjust the ends of the selection it would be great.

You can adjust your selections, but you need to do it on a part-by-part basis. So, if you isolate a section in one lane, but the end of that selection isn't correct, move your mouse into the lane containing the other isolated data and swipe over that. Doing so will adjust the isolated data in the previous lane.

I noticed you have a window up with almost nothing showing except mute/solo. you were using x1. Is such a window possible in X2 using track lanes? I can't get them shrunk down as far as you had them in X1.(showing mute solo only) Close but not as far.
