Essentially, I want a MIDI message from a vst on an audio track to trigger a drum softsynth. How do I do that? I can't figure out how to get the output of the vst to serve as the input to the softsynth. I'm a bit of a newbie, so try to explain thoroughly.

That VST he is using is a free plugin for Reaper called "ReaGate." If interested in that specifically you can download those free plugins here. I am not sure of a way to trigger MIDI from audio inside SONAR offhand, but I am also not a MIDI-heavy.

Yeah I have ReaGate and I have it set up to send the MIDI message. My issues is everything after that: getting that MIDI message to control my softsynth.

I haven't looked either, but I know that in Logic you can insert a midi marker on the timeline and trigger an action from the marker.  I know this doesn't help but it will remind me to follow it up.

Melodyne does audio to MIDI conversion. See my column about this in Sound on Sound magazine. If the audio needs to be derived from a VST synth, do synth recording or bounce the track to create the audio.

Which version of X1 are you running? Inserting and routing soft synths can be a bit confusing at first, but once you have done it a few times it is easier to repeat quickly. This video is done with X1 using Session Drummer 3, which walks through most of the steps you will need. The "input" on Session Drummer 3 (SD3) would need to be set to receive the output from ReaGate to "fire," but will only give you one kit piece. On the "Mixer" tab of SD3, if you right click a kit piece it will give you the MIDI note number (which is referenced in the video in the original post).
 
Melodyne didn't ship with X1, so knowing your version will help us to understand which soft synths you have available, but the above should give you a start with things. Please be sure to circle back as you progress along.

I don't know the vst plugin you are talking about at all, but in general in order for a vst plugin to send midi messages in Sonar it must be configured as a synth rather than an audio fx plugin under utilities>plugin manager.  It's output will then show up as a midi input option on other tracks.
 
Open Cakewalk Plugin Manager in the utilities menu, find the plugin under vst audio effects, highlight it's name, then click plug-in properties. In the dialogue that pops up select 'configure as synth'.
 
 

I just checked in X1 and the option to "Enable MIDI Output" under the VST2 dropdown on the plugin does not exist there (this also adds the plugin to the synth rack). Configuring as a synth in X1 doesn't allow for audio input (only MIDI, but not sure if I am missing something here though). I am not sure if this can be used in X1.
 
I *believe* the "Enable MIDI Output" was introduced in X3.

Drum replacer an Melodyne are super cool but you cant trigger them from a live audio input, you have to generate a MIDI track using it's regional effects. So I've been trying to set up Reagate 
 
- I've enabled VST MIDI input and output ports
- Configured Reagate as a synth rather than an audio fx plugin under utilities>plugin manager
- I've opened a audio track and placed Reagate in the fx bin.
 
But how do I route the output of audio track to a soft synth like session drummer
Ripping my hair out over here people and I sure would appreciate some help as to what I'm doing wrong
