  • Select all cut and pasting oddity

So my normal composition style is to not worry about meter up front.  But eventually it's necessary when porting to Finale for pirnt (God knows they can't handle meter changes nicely, Sonar MUCH better:-)).  Select all, cut, make meter adjustments, paste it all back again.  Weird things have been happening though and I've ignored it til now as it's affecting my work-flow.  I spent way to much time tonight trying to isolate my current challenge, but when I isolate it it works fine.  Just a post to see if anyone else has noticed any strangeness in this area.

So for sure when I select all, cut special, then go to paste special - not all track are still selected sometimes... ??  Manually selecting all before pasting - but still track line-ups are off.  But it does not happen when I try to cut my masterpiece into a small section to share, so a complex problem and why I've ignored it:-)  Anyone else seen oddities?  Could be related to track folders, that is my hypothesis.  Or I'm simply doing something wrong though I've tried everything I can think of now numerous times.

No one else has any issues it's seems but I'll leave this post here just as a reminder to Sonar developers that things like meter and traditional music notation do matter.  Quite the opportunity to rock actually.  No biggie though.  I'm sure hands are quite full juggling Apples :-)++.  If I switched platforms (not gonna happen:-)), I'd get my highend Thunderbolt device I guess...

It sounds like your concern is related to a feature request I posted, which you may want to check out here:

Feel free to add your own specific scenario in the hopes that your case gets handled in the up-coming "Ripple Editing" that Cakewalk are working on for a future release.

Good stuff.  I too could do what I'm after in earlier versions more successfully - for the record.  Thanks for your post!

Hi XXRICH.
I hope I have understood your issue correctly.  Apologies if I have not.
When you paste multiple cut or copied tracks into a project, only select the the first (ie top) track that data is to be pasted into. Your tracks should then line up correctly.

Curious I'll test it out.  So to be sure to capture all (when changing meter), I go to track #1 select all, cut special.
Then do whatever I need to do meter wise.
Then making sure I'm still on track #1, at the corrector measure, and all tracks are again selected (maybe this is the problem) I paste special.

It normally works... but not always which is of course my curse and the reason for my post.  Most recently the pasted tracks are one track off.
:-)

You don't 'select all' before pasting. You only need to select the first of the tracks to be pasted onto.

Also, whilst it wont affect the outcome, it is not necessary to do 'paste special' unless you are changing what is to be put back.. Everything that you cut using ' cut special' will be pasted just using the paste command.

Did not know that, though it shouldn't matter.. ?  I'm seeing inconstant behavior over many many months, in works with a lot of detail.  Can't ever figure it out so I just look for other ways to accomplish what i need.  But I'll try to isolate it in the future.  Was somewhat fishing to see if anyone else saw any similar weirdness:-)

As I said, doing the paste special won't matter. It is just not necessary after the cut special.

Selecting all of the tracks before you paste is what is causing your alignment issue. Did you try just selecting the first track when pasting? I know it sounds counter intuitive, but it does work.

I will try that next time I'm hacking up a work :-)
(thanks much!)
