I'm setting up my new DAW and I wonder if the old habit of naming the DVD drive "Z" is still a good idea.

I wanted to do this before I installed any thing further.

What do you think?

I use "V", but yeah, it still works, and I think it's handy to get it away from all the other drives & partitions...

I'm feeling like a dinosaur this week.

It's been a while since I thought about this stuff. :-)

It seems like, if you are going to change the drive letter that the earlier you do it the better.

Ah, although you can do that, I think Windows still has to store all the places for drives that do not exist until you get up to "z". That takes more memory I would think to say. Not sure but if it is not needed best to just skip a letter and go with the next one - like "m" or so.

The point of the exercise is to move the drive letter for the drive to something high enough in the alphabet that Windows will not assign a new drive to that letter. This may be even more important now with flash drive plugged into a dozen USB ports. Generally if you have programs that access specific drives by letter, you do not want to have windows change that letter. It is also possible to assign a static letter to the drive in disk management, that Windows will remember even if the drive is disconnected and reconnected. Using letters higher in the alphabet for that helps to avoid a conflict if windows has already automatically assigned the same number.

I've used R: (for Recordable) since day 1.  I will install Windows, then right after, I assign my drive letters.  R=Recordable, S=Sound, V=Video, J=Jigantic Storage; T=sound Two, W=VVideo two.
