How to set up a midi track to delay IN REAL TIME playback for a specified time?
In this case I want to have a delayed response of the vst plugin to be delayed 20 ms from the time the string or piano key is pressed.

Enter an time offset in the track inspector
or
slide it forward by that amount of time (may have to turn quantize off to complete that).

The title is updated.  The midi delay needs to be offset in real-time.
Two events are happening:
  1. The audio of the guitar is immediate. (the guitar IS the midi trigger)
  2. The midi needs to be delayed by 20ms then trigger the synth.
Currently the guitar audio and midi and triggered audio happen at the same time.

Possibly non-obvious answer, but why not add an audio delay (with no feedback/character etc) of 20ms to the audio output of the VST?

thanks, ...I'll give it a try. I don't want a ping pong delay.

Try using the Cakewalk Channel Tools - that offers a "boring" delay (not sure if it does 20ms though).

Tried the Channel tools and use it like a reveb pre delay. looks like I'll need way more control more like 2000 ms!
This has potentiaial. I know in Kontakt, in the settings per instument there are some sustain controls. (set the delay time before a string patch swells in.)

You can always put multiple Channel Tools in series :-)

One of the things I've noticed is that the delay is not exactly working. I need control of the VSTI "Attack".
e.g. String section Sustain. It can have an imidiate attack or the attack and be set to slowly fade in then sustain.
Sometimes I don't want the note to be played at all depending on the speed of the piece of music being played in a given section.
