• SONAR
  • vst instrument plays once, then no output

This is weird. With two instruments only, if i record, the instrument sounds, but on playback, no sound. If I re-install it, it plays during playback....once. On rewind, silence. It's as though the first pass then mutes the instrument or removes it.  Any ideas?

No clue if this is related, but I noticed an opposite issue where recording a track would make the Input Echo not function (audio track). The workaround was to cycle the Arm button and the Input Echo would work properly again (until next use) - just not sure if the issue is on the input or output side of that code though. Does cycling the Arm button on the track restore functionality?

Just saw your other thread, so assume they are not related.

Doesn't happen to me, but it could be that you are missing some controller data in your midi track(s). Try moving the mod wheel up during playback. If that doesn't work, try adding an automation lane for CC11.

thanks for the comebacks. I tried both ideas with no luck. There's another anomaly. Once i record that track, I cannot clone it. The MIDI data is there, shows up in PRV and staff view. Just doesn't play unless I reload the instrument.

I can get around it by recording, then when i'm ready to export, reload it again, but......

EastWest reports no problems of similar nature, and all the other EW instrument are functioning normally.

I have run into this with a viola patch in EastWest's Hollywood Strings. I managed to resolve it by copying the midi note data to a new track and rerouting the synth, then deleting the original track. I then re-recorded the CC data. There was something captured in the original CC data that appeared to break the patch. I've never run into this with any other patch in the library nor any other EW library that I use.

That's not a fix. Now mod and pitch wheel changes won't be reset when you stop playback. So, you are missing cc data in your tracks. That's the real fix.

Hey, Dan, thanks for the info. I'm a 71 year old jazz trombonist, so I'll have to figure out what that means, but I'll get there. As an aside, I popped on to your soundcloud page. Applause!!!

CC data is assignable midi continuous controller data. To take an example, in EastWest Hollywood Strings, some patches switch articulations using mod wheel data. The articulations crossfade as you move the wheel up or down. Others require adding midi CC11 data to automate expression. Some use both. There are a lot of CC types available, but the most commonly used are:

  • 1 - Mod Wheel
  • 2 - Breath Controller (no, you don't actually have to have one)
  • 5 - Portamento Time
  • 7 - Volume
  • 10 - Pan
  • 11 - Expression
  • 64 - Sustain Pedal
  • 65 - Portamento On/Off

There are many, many others, but the VST must be programmed to recognize and respond to them. Read the manual for the VST you are using.

Dan

Dan, you are a patience prince. So the issue is with the VST, and not Sonar, then. I'll do some diligence.
