• SONAR
  • Audio dropouts when nudging notes [in 2016.05 update]

I installed the latest update (2016.05) this morning.

Ever since, whenever I nudge notes in the piano roll during playback, the audio (not just for that track, but for all tracks) is interrupted, causing a drop-out.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Is there a fix?

I also get dropouts during playback if I delete notes or run a CAL script (to alter volumes).

I was not getting these dropouts prior to this update.

I am finding I am also getting interruptions in audio playback when doing any of the following:

1) splitting clips
2) dragging notes in the piano roll
3) dragging clips in the track view

So, it seems that the audio engine is getting interrupted every time editing happens.

I didn't have this problem prior to this update.

Audio latency is 11.6 ms, which is what I've used for years.  CPU usage is low (9%), so I know the soft synths are "pushing it".  I also get the same problems on a brand new project.

Is anyone else having more interruptions in playback with the latest version?

Have you tried adjusting your playback buffer size?

Currently my Mixing Latency settings are these:

Buffers in Playback Queue: 2
Buffer Size: 11.6 ms / 512 samples
Effective latency at 44kHz/stereo: 11.6 ms

If I increase the number of buffers to 3, the effective latency doubles (to 23.2 ms), which is not desirable.  I cannot reduce the number of buffers to 1.

I just found an easy test:

1) select a clip in track view
2) start playback
3) quickly move the clip up and down using the numeric keypad
4) listen for pops and clicks and interruptions in the audio stream

I find that at minimum latency (5.8 ms) I get more frequent popping and interruption than at 11.6 ms.  Similarly, if I increase the latency, I get fewer pops/interruptions.

All the while the CPU is very low.  So, does this mean the pops and interruptions are due to the sound card?  (M-Audio Delta 44)?

The strange thing is, I didn't get these frequent pops and interruptions prior to the June 2016 update.

I had this problem some time ago and I solved it as follows:

Edit/Preferences > Audio - Sync and Caching

Under the heading File System, there is:
Enable Read Caching and Enable Write Caching

I enabled one of these and it solved the problem.
Try them, see if it solves the problem for you.

Thanks to your posting, I notice suddenly BOTH ARE DISABLED AGAIN!
But the reason in my case is probably because I recently deleted the aud.ini file.
I'll have to try both myself again.

Thanks for the report.  Will check it out.

Updated to 05 from?
For the drop outs, might be worth running Resplendence Latency Monitor and see if any drivers are misbehaving or otherwise taking too much time to process things.

I keep Sonar updated regularly, so I updated from whatever version was prior to 2016.05.  Was it 2016.04?

I've run 2 different latency monitors and one of them is Resplendence.  Both say my system is suitable for real-time audio streaming without dropouts.  Average latency is around 150 microseconds, and peak is 252, which isn't reached very often.  When I start Sonar, and play my project, avg latency is around 175 microseconds, and peak is 298.

I think the hardware is fine, since I didn't have these frequent dropouts prior to 2016.05.  Nothing else in my system changed (except for the usual monthly Windows updates).  I noticed the dropouts immediately after updating to 2016.05.
