Sounds good to me. I've been upgrading since the DOS version and probably have spent thousands on upgrades during all that time. This is like paying off the mortgage: I get to keep the house and no more loan payments. :) However, I do think I will wait until that June 1 announcement to take the plunge.

See post #2. You are missing the point, as well as the potential revenue sources.

I did see post #2 and I did not "miss the point".
Cakewalks intentions aside, I have analyzed business models for decades. Too many MAJOR paradigm shifts in a very short time usually equates to a company scrambling for cash flow or a lack of CLEAR direction along with disappointing results from prior shifts.  It makes one feel that the company does not really have a "long term" plan for survival. I truly hope I am wrong, as I love working with Sonar.

here's my fairly baseless speculation:

Platinum isn't where the majority of revenue comes from anyway.

That is not a baseless speculation, Noel has confirmed that fact in these forums in the past.

Oh dude take off your tin-foil hat. If SONAR lasts just ONE more year* your investment will have paid for itself. Stop looking for evil when there is none.

*- I suppose technically it would be 16 months until it pays for itself assuming you would upgrade next Jan when the cycle would have come around.

Cakewalk has always had other consumer based products that have also contributed to the health of the company. Not sure how many of you know this but Pyro and Music Creator were huge products for Cakewalk. Music Creator still does quite well. In addition, Dimension Pro, Rapture and Z3TA+ have also been very successful. We'll continue developing more products so we have a healthy mix. That being said, SONAR is still very important to us and SONAR Platinum is the flagship. And of course we have SONAR Artist and Professional as well. We're excited to share some of the developments on June 1st. It's all good news. And btw, there's already a precedent for lifetime updates in our industry.

Okay, but with all due respect, you haven't analyzed Cakewalk's. STEAM and Music Creator provide substantial sources of income that are not impacted one bit by Platinum users who renewed getting lifetime updates. Ditto instrument and plug-ins sales, including those for the Mac. I think Cakewalk has a much more diversified portfolio of revenue sources than you realize, and for which there have been no "MAJOR paradigm shifts."

IIRC the upgrade price is only for Platinum members signing on for the next (this, for the second) year already.
HTH
All the best.
