Been thinking about what I should set my sights on for a new guitar. Should I stop and go for a 58 or keep on saving and get the holy grail. And if it is the holy grail how much better is it than a 58?

Evidentally you stole some of the crown jewels to pay for one of these?

The 58 has a plain top and the 59 has a flame top. If you go for a Custom, it shouldn't have a Maple top at all. They were all Mahogany back in the day. The 59 reissue will always be an easier sell should you have to thin the herd in the future.

Personally, I kinda like this '67 myself...

Personally, the plaintop is what gets me.

Apart from the price I think the difference is

59 has :-
  • Flame top
  • Extended neck tenon
  • Burstbucker pickups
  • Body selected from higher part of tree
I have to admit that I like the grain on the 58's, but I'm really eager to hear about the difference in tone between the two reissue guitars.

I think the '59 has a slightly smaller neck profile and don't quote me but I think the '58 might be a little smaller than the '57 Goldtop... but I am not sure about that.
