Probably 8 ply shells with 7 birch inner layers and an outer layer of maple (makes it less expensive to finish).

In general, Mapex has a reputation for good quality shells and hardware. Birch has a reputation for a bright sound.  With careful tuning it should make a reasonable and cost effective recording kit.

I have not heard good things about the snare drum that come with the M-Birch series (but this is not through personal experience).

With respect to the Sabian B8 cymbals … this is strictly my opinion … they are not really professional cymbals.

So, after negotiating the price down a bit …

on the positive side you will be getting a nice shell pack and solid hardware

on the negative side you will be getting a set of practice cymbals and a wimpy snare drum

Get it!

Dave's right about it's shortcomings but for that price it is a no brainer.

Those Tom sizes are perfect for the studio.

The snare might work well in the context of the rest of the kit, so may the cymbals even if they are 'pressed' rather than 'cast', when you are recording that may even be a good thing as the cymbals are less likely to overpower the overhead mics anyway.

For the price and the starting point if will give you in the studio you can't go wrong.

Good to see you've been trained correctly.  Otherwise, 20 years down the road (possibly long after the drumset is gone) you'll STILL be hen-pecked for buying it without consultation!

Were you able to convince "The Chosen One" that the $1000 fund was her idea?  This is very important!
