Probably 8 ply shells with 7 birch inner layers and an outer layer of maple (makes it less expensive to finish).
In general, Mapex has a reputation for good quality shells and hardware. Birch has a reputation for a bright sound. With careful tuning it should make a reasonable and cost effective recording kit.
I have not heard good things about the snare drum that come with the M-Birch series (but this is not through personal experience).
With respect to the Sabian B8 cymbals … this is strictly my opinion … they are not really professional cymbals.
So, after negotiating the price down a bit …
on the positive side you will be getting a nice shell pack and solid hardware
on the negative side you will be getting a set of practice cymbals and a wimpy snare drum
