"Please note, these are just some generalizations. Lots of artists cross over into other genres and you can really define your style as anything you want. But when you’re trying to promote your band, you want to use styles and artists that people understand and have heard of; otherwise you’re just another random band with a strange sound."
Jeez...it doesn't take much for you guys huh?? Lol.
I think this is the result of a commercial ideal and what music is supposed to sound like. And, maybe, sometimes, a DAW!
The 60's and most of the 70's, and eventually a lot of the music that became known as "progressive", was about everything BUT the styles or ideas, and least of all ... that "people understand" ... to the point that even Syd Barrett had a famous line in the bootlegs that said ... "... people have stood, and cheered, something they did not understand!"
Most of the European scenes stuck to the "art" of it all, because they have more art history than America ... and doing something "different" is better appreciated than here ... where everyone has to do the same thing and be named in the top ten ... for anyone to consider it ... "good".
And it has been one of my main concerns, just so you kow, that the Progressive Boards, have not, and will not, consider the scenes in NY, SF and LA progressive ... because they did not last ... and yet, they were, by far, the greates inspiration to so many ... when it came to doing something "different".
Pop music was not going to do "Sweet Jane" or "Heroin" ... and that is a problem with the social milieu that is afraid of the artists because they can speak their minds off ... and Europe has a massive history of this ... in America? ... just like the Coffee House .. you bury it in the "politically incorrect" bullmerde!
