It's all important. Notation, playing skills, intuitive feel. Some people are good at sight reading and playing, it's a practiced art just like all the rest. If you ran into some snobs, so what. If they're not willing to work with you based on the fact you don't excell in that area of music, give them the big hidi ho. On the same note, if you're not willing to learn those methods and how to work with them, the big hidi ho again.
Everyone has their own genius, there are levels of fluency amoung professional musicians which amounts to understanding the technical language of music. That technical language can get quite huge with modern music and electronic equipment, synthesizers, etc. It's all relative. Hidi Ho.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be more of a skipping bass, since a walking bass would likely include a B and a D as part of the walk up.

And Beagle, yes about the running joke, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, a single A could be A, Am, Aaug, Adim, A6, A7, Amin7, Adim7, A9, Am9, A11, A13, among others.
