Hi,

Rain, if I go to NY, I go straight to the Actor's Studio ... I have some acting exercises (mentioned here btw) that Mr. Lipton is interested in ... my problem being ... I not only can not afford it, I have no place to stay  ... etc ... etc ... I would spend my time scouring used record stores and checking out the concerts ... I can catch a Robert Fripp there, I will never catch him in Portland or Seattle! Or a Peter Hammill ... or Tangerine Dream one more time before I go ... or Ryuichi Sakamoto one more time ... but it will never happen elsewhere.

I'll never forget my first day in New York, after moving into my apartment on the Upper West Side I took a stroll down Broadway and passed a little jazz club/bar called Smoke. On the blackboard outside: "Tonight: George Benson." My jaw just dropped. Where else are you going to see a star play in a tiny little place like that.

You know, almost every night I pass in front of what used to be "The Scene" on 46th - where Hendrix used to go jam (that's where they recorded that bootleg of him and Morrison, completely drunk). Looks like a disaffected building now.

But I can't help thinking that somewhere out there in NY, any given night, something similar could happen.

There are thousands of historical surprises in NYC, sometimes where you least expect them. Years ago I ended up homeless "in between" apartments for a week and naively stayed in a grotty little "men's" hotel right at the end of Jane St in the West Village. It was more like a hostel, filthy dirty with tiny little suffocating rooms like prison cells, and full of old alcoholics who coughed and wretched all night. I was feeling pretty sorry for myself until around the 3rd day, when I discovered that it was the very same hotel to which they had brought many of the Titanic survivors in 1912. From that point, I didn't mind staying there.

Since then it's been totally remodeled and is apparently now a very chic place to stay.

Me and Spacey just happen to live in one of the coolest (and also hottest this year) places on Earth but (and my apologies if you don't concur Spacey,  ol pal) we'd just as soon that nobody else knew about it at all.  Why'nt yall all go to Houston or New York City or one a them other cool places.  Nothin ta see down heah.  Ya'll don't come back now, ya heah:-)

You got that right myolpal.
Now they're welcome to visit but they gotta understand that company is
like underwear....after a couple of days it's time for a change.

I loved Space_Cowboys post...I think I know what he thinks of Mexico LOL.

I'd really get a kick out of seeing the eyes of any of those big city boys while they were
skittin' and gettin' with that razorback on their heels LOL ...now that's funny chit.

Ya know it just seems nuts to me...I've read about how much gas a person let's loose
everyday and seeing all those city folk piled up...well I have laugh my butt off and all the
while I'm enjoying the nice aroma of the woods watching the wildlife do it's thing.
Yesterday I watch a beautiful hawk ...killing it's lunch. Wouldn't trade that for all the cement
in the world.

Can ya get arrested in the city for pissin' off your back porch?
If so...what do they charge ya with?

I have a serious question too...I see them handcuff people all the time on TV and the
cops tell them it's for everyones protection until everyone knows what's going on...
Don't they know that a cop can't legally handcuff one until they are under arrest?
Why don't they tell them, "sorry, you need to wait until I'm arrested for something before
you slap those on me"....hell the crazy one could still be close by and now they're all tied
up and can't get to their gun if they need it... now I think it's because those city folks sniff
way to much gas...I could be wrong.

i have seen a hawk killing a squirel in herman park, which is in the center of the city.  i have seen hawks circling bayous looking for opossum.  i have seen white owls perched over a restaurant near the Rice campus.  Some of our bayous have gators.  we have huge colonies of raccoons in storm drains in parts of the city.  I have seen several of them making their way through 4' garbage cans.

The big Piney is just northeast of Houston.  We have a lot of wildlife for a city.  Not Arkansas mind you.

I'm sure not someone to put down a place
I've never been.

I can say about the only thing I miss about Houston
is Mark Wessells.
I hope is new band is coming along great and we get
to hear from him soon.

To heck with the hawks...maybe we need carrier pigeons.

I'd never seen a raccoon or a squirrel until I moved to the city in my twenties. I don't think I had ever seen a rat (except as pets) before we arrived in NY. As far as wild life where I come from, I remember jackrabbits, a few skunks, beavers and bats - loved those, we used to catch them to see what they really looked like when we were kids. The rest of the wild life had plenty of forest to stay hidden from us.

I wish I could see possums! Anything w/ no more than 4 legs is ok in my book, though I may prefer to see them from a distance.

Unfortunately, the type of creatures everyone talks about since we're moving to Vegas are humongous spiders and scorpions. Oh, and the occasional snake. Lovely.

I'm lucky enough not to have to go underground that often, except for our weekly trip to East Village. That particular line can be hot as hell, but I've smelled worst.

Last year, we lived on a lower floor and our suite was on 42nd side. Since we're near the Lincoln Tunnel, it's a honk fest between 2 pm and 8 pm almost everyday. We're up higher this year and on 41st side, so it does effectively cancel a lot of the noise - and as you say, the noise floor is quite high.

But having spend the first 20 years of my life in a small town of 11 000, any city is noisy by comparison.

I'm hoping we'll have a relatively quiet neighborhood in Vegas, away from the strip. But ultimately, we'll go back up north, in the mountain. There's nothing like the sound of the wind shaking leaves in the trees and a river for a background noise. :)

my nyc office is at 48th and 3rd and I usually stay in hotels in the area.  I love that part of nyc but it is very loud.

Les Paul used to play two shows at the Iridium Room on Columbus Circle.  I saw him once and got a brief chance to talk to him.  The Thomas Edison of music.  RIP Les

"Hip" is in the eye of the beholder.  There are many reasons to live where we do.  If you're into art and music, a big city is hip.  If you're into quiet and calm, the country is hip.  Any given place has good and bad points.  We each have to decide what's important.  I've lived in Orange County and San Diego in California mostly because of my job.

These lists are just for entertainment and fun discussions like this.  Is anyone really going to move just because they saw a name on a list?

BTW, statistics aren't all that important--unless your one of them.
