You should update to the latest build and try there.

just did. 2016.03 gives identical problem. suspecting once more the Roland drivers doing something that other drivers don't do ...

will try later to completely rebuild the project to see if it still crashes or if I can reproduce somehow on a virgin project + template.

does it make sense to be using 2016.03 for that? is the project then still fully compatible with Sonar Manchester, Newburyport, O-something ...?

more convinced this is caused by template rather than FabFilter. could reproduce in new project using same template as i used before but not if i don't use that template...

New versions are always downwards Compatible with earlier ones. The only exception is if you use a brand new feature that doesn't exist in a early version. In that case it will still load ok but skip the saved data for the new feature.

that's indeed very helpful to know :-)

... especially as this is not general software industry practise (there are actually companies out there who sell modular software but then purposely break backward compatibility to force users to pay annual maintenance to be able to read projects from clients)

We have always designed for both forwards and backwards compatibility. It would have been impossible to implement a rolling updates model without this capability.
You can open a Platinum project all the way back in SONAR 3.
And Platinum can open pretty much any Cakewalk file dating back to wrk files from Cakewalk DOS :)

Do you have EZDrummer 2 in the template?
