I'm just starting to dive deep into all the soft synth sounds.  I'm just a dumb guitar player and the amount of sounds that came with my 8.5 PE is a bit daunting.  Can anyone recommend a good Deep Purple organ sound and a good widdly Lucky Man sound?  I've been using my JV-1010's PUPRLE SPIN and YOU AND LUCK for years and I'm sure there has to be comparable sounds in Dimension Pro, Dropzone, TTS, etc.

Can anyone recommend a good starting point (outside of the obvious "organ" recommendation)?

Rapt (I think, it might be DimPro) has a "Jimmy"  preset in organs (again, I believe) that is most credible.

Lucky man is one of the first minimoog sounds that made the mainstream.  Mine came w/ a sheet to replicate that sound.  I have no idea where it is.  I bet a copy is around the internet - google.  But it should be easy to replicate.  Two saw waves (I'd try first), short VCA attack, long VCF attck and depth, plenty of filter resonance (but not sefl resonating) and glissando.  As w/ all synth programming, a lot depends upon how you play, esp. w/ the filter movement making up so much of the sound.

I saw the "Jimmy" patch in the Dim Pro Expansion section.  I mixed a few with the "Keith" setting and I'm getting it closer.

I'm going to try to create the Lucky sound tomorrow.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

AT has you covered on the Lucky Man sound.
As for the Deep Purple sound, I do basically what Jon did.
Run the organ through an amp.
I'll start with a basic organ patch, and insert an amp sim in the FX bin. A preset with a thicker sound seems most effective. Some of the thinner presets intended for lead not so much.
Some examples:
This one is really dirty, maybe more than you are looking for.

Nice and fat, with plenty of overdrive, but not quite as dirty as Moonlight.

This one is experimental, and kind of out there. It is barely recognizable as an organ, and relies heavily on the amp sim.

None of these is an attempt to replicate the DP sound, but maybe it gives you some ideas.

Those certainly sound pretty beefy.  I like the grit added to the chunk.

It's a good tip to look at how the original sounds were made - check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mW9b_KRedQ

Also some of Jon Lords most distinctive sounds were as a result of layering a hammond B3 and RMI electra piano and passing it trough a marshal amp. I have played around with Kontakt and Amplitube to get that sort of effect. You could do it with a couple of instances if Dim Pro and route it through your amp sim. You will need to set up a bus so both instances go into the amp.

For Lucky Man, what AT said, but portamento, not glissando (says he, pedantically, but there is a difference). On the original track, if I recall correctly the portamento rate is not constant. Depending on the synth you could probably change the rate using automation.

Glyn,

you say portamento, I say potato. ;-)

And of course an amp sim can have a great effect on the sound.  Sometimes too much, since they all seem to be " guitar amps."  Where's the damn leslie and whirling hall of knives?  Guitar sims (the full ones you get in Producer) can add some nice faux air.

For clean and slightly driven sounds this is nice http://www.xils-lab.com/pages/LX122.html  GSi's VB3 is probably still the best at emulating a distorted rock Leslie sound.

For Lucky Man one of the key ingredients are the oscillators set to square waves (not saws) http://www.keyboardmag.co...y-minimoog-sounds/2290

Good catch, Francesco.  I listened to Lucky Man this weekend and it certainly sounded smoother than I remembered.  Any of your moog waves you'd recommend for it?
