I want to use the sounds from my Roland Fantom X6 in Sonar Platinum as a synth and I'm in need of some help with setup.

My current setup is:

Fantom MIDI Out connected to MOTU MicroLite MIDI In 1

MOTU MicroLite MIDI Out 1 connected to Fantom MIDI In

I'm not sure how to route the MIDI tracks in Sonar so they will play back using the Fantom sounds...I want to record MIDI sequences in Sonar using the sounds from my Fantom then record the audio into Sonar. I assume this should all work if I connect my Fantom's audio outs to my audio interface's audio ins?

Search the web for the Instrument Definition for the Fantom X6. Using that will allow you to select the Roland's patches in SONAR/CbB and the keyboard will play them.
Then you would record the audio from each track one at a time into SONAR.

I see from your other post that you have already done that.
Does SONAR play the sounds correctly through the keyboard?
Perhaps if you tell us how you have things routed now we can suggest alternatives. Or post a screenshot of your track routings.

Yes, your presumption is correct. That's exactly how you do it.

Although your setup would be my own preferred method for a variety of reasons, a possible alternative would be to use the USB port on the Fantom for both MIDI and audio (assuming it can do that; not a Fantom user myself).

I don't think it has S/PDIF, but if I'm wrong about that then that would be the better way to record your audio. But taking the synth's audio outputs straight into the audio interface is the simplest way, as long as the interface has line-level inputs.

Its simple and you have described it just right. Only thing which patch/channel should play needs to be setup correctly.
Basically once you have got the MIDI connections done and tested that they work fine, select your Fantom as the MIDI input into your Sonar MIDI track or leave it as Omni if you do not have any other MIDI input devices.
Then route the output of the MIDI track to Fantom as well. Record the MIDI from your Fantom into the MIDI track. Then when you play back the MIDI track, it will play the audio from your Fantom.
Once you have made any edits to your MIDI track as required, you can record the audio from your Fantom into a separate audio track in Sonar after making the interface connections as you described.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I can record midi from the Fantom into Sonar fine but I'm not hearing anything on playback. I'm wondering if this is to do with the way my midi track's input/output is set up?

My MIDI interface has 5 ins and 5 outs so for example if I want to record a part on midi channel 2 I have the MIDI track's input set to MicroLite MIDI In 1, MIDI channel 2. I've set the track's output to MicroLite MIDI Out 1. Does that sound like it's routed correctly?

Do you have Bank and Patch set in the MIDI track pane also?
Do you currently have the Fantom's audio outputs connected to the Roland and an audio track set to that input, and Input Echo on?

Yes, assuming MIDI Out 1 is then routed to the synth. But make sure it's on channel 2 also, and that the synth is set to channel 2 or Omni.

i have a fantom XR and that had a sort of intermediary GUI synth type thing but was flakey when it worked on old systems and was never upgraded after XP (at least that's how I remember it). But I love the Fantom libraries-- did you know that they were mostly programmed by Mr Spectrasonics Eric Persing

The thing is, I'm not sure the Fantom's receiving MIDI data from SPLAT during playback. I can record MIDI data fine but there must be a setting on the Fantom I've missed...
