  • Mix Recall bugged, loses FX data

I was considering coming here earlier to post about how useful Mix Recall is, since I'm usually quite negative about the new Sonar features that appeared in the last year. Unfortunately I'm instead coming here to complain because Mix Recall lost some of my settings. It seemed to switch between them properly to begin with, then I did a Export so I could compare 2 mixes more quickly. After that, it has 'restored' my mix to a state where several plugins (specifically, Voxengo Voxformer and NI Solid Dynamics) have lost their settings, settings that took me ages to dial in. I don't know for sure whether the problem is with Sonar or with the plugins, but the plugs have never given me trouble before.

So, thanks but no thanks. Now I spend my afternoon trying to get back to where I was before.

I can easily have Guitar Rig 5, Valhalla Room and Voxengo plugins lose their settings by switching scenes or reloading the current scene. I think not all 3rd-party plugins work properly with the feature. I use GR5 and VRoom in all my projects, so I decided not to use the feature again until the compatibility issue is fixed.

You must have done a save as before experimenting surely?

mix control is truly amazing... I have to "chuckle" at your post, Mr. Jones.  You have a gift
And I guess I'm fortunate to be "karmically" properly "plugged" in.

I do tend to still re-save when I reach a monster point of glee... as with virtually all aspects of life, crap happens

Dana I habitually save, resave, save as, rename to the point where most would consider just a little bit more than OCD.

I had a major panic yesterday when I was editing a project and realised I hadn't saved for over an hour

To the OP it has been reported here that not all plugs respond to this function fully, if you would be so kind as to indicate which plugs are not retaining their settings, possible others could confirm the problems you are experiencing.

Then they could be reported to Cakewalk in the Problems reports Forum so that it could possibly be resolved.

Unfortunately not all plug makers fully comply with the standards they should be when writing their software.

Kylotanspecifically, Voxengo Voxformer and NI Solid Dynamics

I didn't realize using an advertised feature that has been available for months qualified as "experimenting". The way Mix Recall works is it "saves" the state of plugins and faders and automation. Why would you need to save on top of a save? I think it's perfectly valid to be upset about this and I find the "surely you saved" comment and the way that it was put a little condescending, to be honest. I still haven't really gotten into Mix Recall but it is good to know that it isn't actually as fail safe as regular saving. I use ValhallaRoom quite a lot and it was mentioned as a plug that potentially causes problems, so rather than spending time figuring out why my mix scene doesn't sound like I remember I'll just not use it.

There are a few plugins that potentially have bugs with order of operations when saving and loading state.
As such this isn't a failing of Mix Recall per se. Mix recall essentially a high level macro that automates the process of saving and restoring various aspects of the project state. There have been cases where people have reported loss of plugin parameters even when loading projects. Mix recall may expose that same issue.
We have a couple of documented cases of this in-house so we will follow up and try and address it on our end. If we can't we'll contact the plugin vendors.
