(Usually the intermediate versions tend to suck - lol!)

Uh, it could be argued that W7 is intermediate to XP/Vista and W8, no?

John when I went with a new PC 64 bit and Win7 the only
issue was drivers - from jumping on so quick.

Win7 64 bit and the additional RAM was like finally getting the
right carb and timing...ready to run. Best thing that's happened
since I've been messin' with this. JMO OMMV.

The biggest issue as I recall was how the 32 and 64 bit was
located in different folders. I learned that the hard way installing
the Spectrasonics stuff....that'll sure test ya. Once I found that out..
no problems.

Thanks all, the old machine will probably just be demoted to replace this old P4 I use for internet connection.

I will investigate the bare-bones approach.

I have seen a couple of configurable units from a PC DAW supplier which I have used previously, I do not need a state of the blood letting edge.

My soundcard and Midi interface have 64bit drivers all my soft-synths are now 64bit consequently the upgrade to a 64bit OS is inevitable.

As for Win 8 when I worked in IT there was an old adage about using even numbered Microsoft releases.  Lets wait for SP1 on that?

I'm not sure how to go about upgrading my PC anymore. I've had such horrible luck running X1 on my home built system that I'm tempted to save my money and pay the extra for Jim to build me a rock solid system.

I see so many people, myself included, complain about how X1 runs, but I can't ever remember one of them having a pro built DAW.

My experience has been, you are taking a big risk building something yourself to save money when it comes to DAW's.

I'm so looking forward to X2, but I know it won't run on my system, and by the time I have enough money saved for a pro built DAW, we may in fact be on X3 or X4.

I will never build my own DAW again for the simple fact that I want someone to go back to that I can say to, hey, this doesn't work, fix it or I want a refund. Hardware is a little different than software in that regard.

I have several friends who swear by Vista and still use it. Apparently if you have a nuclear powered internet connection and can get all the updates for it without having to wait 6 days for the downloads, it runs very well. It's basically W7 at that point from what they tell me.

NOBODY in the corporate world wanted Vista.  I was in Intel's back room doing a contract for them and you wouldn't believe the cursing that went on about it (they HAD to include it in their motherboard tests).  Many home users got stuck with Vista but it completely sucked until, at least, the first service pack was put out (might even have been the second, I don't know, I stayed with XP Pro).

Some in MS have admitted that Vista was released half-baked to meet a time shedule (they're required to produce a new OS every X number of years I guess).
