  • Which bands have released a bit of a duffer for their first album?

Even though they've gone on to produce some pretty good stuff since that disappointing debut...
  • Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla
  • Saxon - Saxon
Thinking about it, these two albums were guilty of some pretty piss-poor artwork too:

Already mentioned this in the other thread, but one of my favourite bands, Del Amitri, released a horrible debut album, where they decided not to play any chords, just single line guitar parts. It's unlistenable tripe. Then they toured the US and came back with Waking Hours, with songs like this gem;

'Stone cold sober, looking for bottles of love'..brilliant.

John Tesh (didn't improve either though he keeps trying).

Couldn't disagree more. The first album is the gem. Everything after that is just a tiresome dirge of middle of the road rock.

For me, number one example with nothing else even close close would be Radiohead (first album Pablo Honey, everything since good to superb).  I read somewhere that Thom Yorke would like to disown that first effort.

A reasonable alternative would be Muse (first album Showbiz, second Orgins of Symmetry, then a string of very, very solid offerings).

Agreed about Radiohead, though I did loose interest after Amnesiac.

Took me forever to take Muse seriously after I first heard them - whatever that first song was, it made me think of them as a Radiohead rip off.

Took my wife to turn me onto them - the last few albums were totally brilliant. I still have issues w/ the way the vocal is mixed. Constantly sounds over-the-top. But he is a brilliant rock singer. Saw them live in 2010 and they blew me away.

These were pretty forgettable, without a hint of the huge influence they would have in the decades that followed:
