I've have heard that many times too ... from the same article:

" ...'We were cowards,' Lennon would say many years later. 'We got Epstein to do the dirty work for us.' ..."

I'm sure it didn't do his ego any good but I believe he got a decent pay off in the end

My understanding is that he really didn't make any "Beatles" money until they released Anthology in 1995.
