working so posted a short video. ( a minute)
Notes for interested;

From what I've read sticky carpet tape seems to be
what most use to hold the pup to the bobbin.
I tried it and didn't like it.
I decided I wanted "jigs" that bolted to the bobbin so I made
two- one for Strat and one for Tele "neck".
The pups have a hole in the center so I screw it to the
wooden jig that is routed for clearance of the pups magnets and
eyelets- to mount flush.

When I pan to the left- the routed jig can be seen and also the
magnetic reed switch that is simply wired direct to the counter.
The magnet is on the backside of the aluminum bobbin.

Hard to see the counter in the video but not hard to see live.
The counter is rated to 6,000 rpm's - I geared about 2.7 to 1 and max out
at 2565 so hope the reed switch can keep up. Not sure how fast
I'll be able to wind...never done it.
( I also painted the shaft black so I could use a laser tach.)

Well it works so now I can mount it to a base and build the wire
guides. Another step closer. :)

Adding this for everyone but especially for Mike as he
requested keeping him updated...so Mike..from here
it's just getting some wire and going for it.

I suspect the location of the guides may be the only issue now other
than skill. Here are some detail shots not in video.
I didn't want to deal with wiring
to make mod's so I designed it easy to take apart. Both
components feed in through the front.

Good shot of magnet and reed switch.
.......
If I make another I'll used the flanged bearing rather than the pillow block.
You can see the black painted shaft with reflector tape for the laser tach.

"Jig" to show reliefs for eyelets and magnets-also centers the
pup. Sloppy but hey...it was my first and it works lol.
Old pickups that I just removed the wire so I could make the "jigs". You
can see that they aren't flat enough for sticky tape to hold them.
.
Guide bar attached- I used part of an oak
paper towel holder :)
.
I may enclose the back.

Hope ya'll enjoy...and don't throw those old pups away! lol...ya never know
when you might can use 'em.

The Maillard Reaction
Wow, I'm inspired.

Sorry for the slow response. I started a shift at 1300 yesterday and we ended up going all night through to a CBS Early Show live shot this morning.

I'm on 1-1/4 hours sleep and trying to stay up til evening so I'll stay normal.

I'm gonna have to study what you have done when my head clears up, but I can say off hand that I'm real impressed with your sourcing of parts.

It's all sort of simple... but I can imagine how much time it takes to get it all working together.

I'm hoping you'll help me with the details in a month or two... cause I can feel the bug coming on!

best regards,
mike

Variable speed I hope. 2565 sounds a bit fast. I think you'll want to wind at much slower speeds.

Yes. It can be seen in the video. It's the round knob next to the on switch which also has
selection to be variable or full on.

I'm surprised you haven't gone the sewing machine foot pedal route for the acceleration, leaving you hands free whilst controlling the winding speed.

It looks like a fun gadget just now though.

Alex I do a lot of recording. I just don't post it anymore...haven't
since @'09. I have posted little snippets here for fun but nothing
else. What's posted at Mixposure is everything "band like" that
I've posted. If not for Jeff I'd remove it. I don't have time to
get envolved with the site so to me it's a holding tank for the
stuff Jeff wanted to do.
I did get a couple of instrumentals in. :)

Jon I understand why you're surprised. That seems to be the popular control.
I was going to get the pedal with the motor as it is a sewing machine motor and
decided I wanted everything on the bench.
I'm not going to mount the control either so I can find what's comfortable.

I'll probably order a spool of wire tomorrow and give her a spin.
