A week ago Friday UPS dropped off one of these for my wife:



It's an extremely short scale bass built on the 28.625" scale (a.k.a. 26-5/8").

It was cheap and it was reviewed as being packed with value. It is everything I hoped for.



My wife has a few instruments but she doesn't play very much. Her other short scale basses are all neck heavy. Her Gibson SG bass is so neck heavy I consider it barely playable.

Anyways, she loves this new lightweight miniature Ibanez Mikro bass. I'm hoping it will make it easier for her to jam with us occasionally.




The crazy thing is... I've been going hog wild with it. It is so much fun to play that short scale. One thing that I've noticed is that it's so easy to move around the board but you have to pay extra attention if you want to coax a low growl out of the short strings. It's been an exercise in working on touch sensitivity. It's been a whole lot of fun.

Her Gibson SG bass is so neck heavy I consider it barely playable.

I like this line.

Many of MY left handed set-ups would have been considered unplayable by many, but do I care?

I did a set up for my buddies lefty son on a Epiphone EB0 bass a week or two ago.

It was nerve wracking to attempt determine if it was playable or not.

I played it upside down and did my best... and asked him to bring it back when/if he develops an opinion about it. We're hoping to stumble on a hot lefty bassist to offer some test drive insights too. :-)

The worst part is I made him a nice custom brass nut... the weight of which will certainly exacerbate the neck heavy characteristic of that design.

I bought my Wife her Gibson SG bass because it has a short neck and it was yellow. I ordered it from afar.

I was surprised to see that after 40 years of making the same Bass Gibson places the bridge on the body in a place where a proper intonation isn't possible. Then I slowly learned about the neck always falling towards the ground. :-)

To bad too... cause that SG bass is a good looker and the pickups have a nice tone that is different enough from a P or J that I want to keep it around regardless. :-)

This Ibanez is so different... I'd opine that it feels too light, but my wife really appreciates that aspect of it.

Nice shorty bass!

A couple of weeks ago I pulled a Hofner off the rack at GC and played one for the first time.  Not the greatest playing instruments I know, but I was intrigued with the short scale.  Much easier to bounce around the neck.  I could kind of see how Mac developed his playing style bassed on the instrument.

Mooch has an Ibanez (SR500 IIRC). I found it difficult to play. My hands were too big for it.
