Next time, they should try sneaking the wood in labeled as "Epiphone".

I'd like to know the details of what made their purchase illegal.

What I'd guess is that the wood has to be processed before
being sold.
So in this particular case the wood would have to have been cut
to "market" at fretboard dimensions in relation to the specific instrument.
I wouldn't think that would include radius or slots but I don't know.

There's info out there if you read through all the stuff.

One particular explanation included claims that the wood confiscated was smuggled out of India in such a way as to minimize the rate of the Indian export tariff.

The government of India requested, under International law, that the "mistake" be corrected and Gibson reacted to the request ineffectively... which resulted in a raid and confiscation.

Then Gibson tried to use a smear campaign to intimidate anyone that dared question what happened.

I wish they would spend more time on QC... most of the Gibson guitars seems as badly finished now as they did during the Norlin Era.

Bummer.

I admit I haven't spent time keeping track...and probably won't.
I'll wait for a short story version if it's ever clear.

I'm not a Gibson player although I do own a LP if needed.
If I wanted the "real" Gibson I'd get a Heritage.

I imagine that after this, Gibson will move a store over to Europe or some other place in the Himalayas and still build the guitars and then pay the tariff of 17 cents to bring it in! And then have Musicians Friend will still sell it for $799 dollars! Heck, they can even use child labor and cheap labor to make more money!

I really doubt that "rosewood" or "ebony" are the only woods that can be used for instruments ... and that a lot of studies have been made on this, but our ears are de-sensitized to one thing only ... with today's effects, you would not be able to tell the difference anyway! Maybe Bapu on a drunken night, or Mooch on a lovesick night ... !!!
