Can you not insert an FX while SONAR is playing? Every single time I try to insert a UAD FX in the FX bin while playing back a song, SONAR freezes/ locks up on me. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hi. I just tried inserting 3 instances of UAD2 plugins in a project when playing without a problem. SONAR hung on me when I removed them (probably to quickly with Ctrl+Z). Did not have any issues the next time I did that exact thing (both insert and remove with Ctrl+Z). Does this happen with any specific plugins, or all UAD plugins?
All the best.

I've never had the courage to do any such inserts during playback. IMO it's begging for trouble even if it theoretically should be possible. I just can't see any benefit.

I assume succeeding in such actions greatly depends on your systems resources and the weight of the project.

In my case, I do it all the time. I sometimes / rarely get a little sync issue when inserting certain plugins, and I never seem to remember which plugins that does that
All the best.

I totally agree Kalle.

Personally I cannot envisage a situation where I would want to insert an fx plugin whilst the project is playing.
As you say, it's asking for trouble and you do run into sync issues as noted by Zargg71 so you would have to stop the transport from running anyway in order to sync it back up.

I myself rarely, if ever, adjust anything other than mixing console knob tweaks while recording or playing back.  It's just a habit.

Sorry I cannot tell you what things work OK or if some things do not.  I CAN say that it has been a good several years now since I had a Sonar crash, so for me Sonar is certainly stable these days, with me adding/removing plugins or whatever - during recording/playback.

@Zargg71, it seems to happen with any UAD plug-in, not just any particular one. So I guess this "gapless audio" feature was never really a feature. I'm really really close to jumping ship with not just this issue but what seems to be a fast growing number of issues. Trying hard to wait until my one year membership expires before deciding but issues like these and others are making it hard to do so, i.e., after the last update I couldn't disconnect from the internet without getting a pop-up that says SONAR is in demo mode, and I can't save changes. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can understand your frustration with demo mode.
but to say your jumping ship over not being able to insert plug ins while playback is in progress is a wee bit tedious to me.
as others have stated, but im just speaking for myself, I always stop playback before inserting FX, editing (well some editing, not all). there are certain things you can do to make your life easier and other things your just asking for trouble.
I have a great processor (Intel I7 4790K) now I just tested if I could insert plug ins while play back is rolling and I CAN. but...with that said, I wouldn't. its very easy to stop playback, it takes literally 2 seconds.

im sure you could find another DAW with a better gapless feature but to be honest, it probably has a different short coming in another area which makes it even out a bit.
each DAW is different, I personally find Sonar to do what I want it to do better then any other.
I find free Audacity to do a few things nicely, but I wouldn't leave sonar over a couple features.
sure you have to weigh these options out, but this topic here (inserting fx during playback)
shouldn't be a big factor.

I constantly insert and delete plugins during playback. It has never occurred to me that it would be necessary to stop the transport. If a plug incurs latency I do have to stop and start again. And I do get little hickups. Never had a crash from that though.

Same here - minor glitches or gaps depending on the plugin and current project load, but never a crash.
