FYI, my synth freezing after about 1/2 second of key down was due to after-touch from my keyboard. Apparently, the after touch signal messed things up. I turned it off, at least set it to 0, and everything now works. I have no more excuses for not moving ahead with my projects!

In general, aftertouch shouldn't cause this behavior. I record aftertouch all the time as many synths use it for added expression. I would say the likely cause is the way aftertouch is implemented in your controller. There may be settings in your controller that will allow you to configure what gets sent to Sonar, but it sounds like a midi buffer overflow.

I hear ya about the aftertouch. I thought it was a standard thing, and I should have recognized that was the issue when I first saw that keeping the key depressed caused the problem. My little keyboard has several modes of aftertouch, which I have not figured out. I simply set it to zero, which I figured would probably be no aftertouch, and things started to work. Not being a midi expert, I'm not sure I'd need any aftertouch, but I will research it further. Main main objective in this is to create, and add to some tracks for my solo/duo performances, which are usually simple organ, piano, strings, etc. I always want to learn, but it sometimes is so painful and time consuming. Thank you.

Some folks add articulations and modifications to midi tracks using an additional midi track set to point to the same soft synth.

I do this a lot with things like sampled violin instruments, where there may be 20 or more articulations that can be applied.  I will frequently record my playing straight through something, and then I will add a 2nd midi track pointing to the violin synth and add modulation/articulation changes in one or more additional passes - so the original track will play, and I will capture the modulation/articulation changes with the 2nd midi track, which are then picked up and processed when both tracks are played back.

The above is just a thought -  I sort of approach it like I do with adding and modifying effects to tracks.
