I'm sitting up late working (organizing my music actually) with the window open when I hear some weird sounds outside and look out just in time to see a grunting coyote running off with a crying rabbit.  The attack took place in one of four front yards (including ours), but I don't know which.  All I saw was the coyote heading down the middle of the street with it's prize still alive.

I'm really hoping it's not the little bunny that lives out in our backyard.  We've had her since she was the last of the litter of five to survive and she's not afraid of us at all.  It always makes me smile to see her out there but I know she sometimes goes to the front yard as well and there aren't a lot of other bunnies around here right now (so, yes, we only have ONE out back, not 12 - lol).  I've only seen one other but it's another female.

Even if it wasn't our little girl, it still was a bit disturbing to hear the happy grunting of the coyote and the pathetic crying of the bunny...

*Sigh...*

Oh Blah Dee... Oh Blah Dah...... life (and death) goes on.

Clearly a case of mixed emotions.....

Ummmm tasty rabbit...... Then again..... if the rabbit was a regular and constant visitor to your yard...... sad.

Yep, she lived in the backyard and would get within just a few feet of us (3-4).  We never tried to touch her or feed her though, she had plenty of long green grass which is a bunny's favorite food (carrots are a myth) so we just let her be.  Here's a collage I made of her when she was young and still being fed by mama (ya, I even have her "baby" pictures - lol!).  Every day when I check on my 83 year-old mother she always asks for a bunny report; she's not going to like today's...

Sad.  I'm mildly surprised that you have coyotes that far north.

TONS of wildlife up here, even in the populated areas.

I knew about tons of wild life.  Just not coyotes.  I usually associate them with dessert areas.  We have plenty of them down here.

Sad.
Though of course that's the way nature works - and I love coyotes just as much as bunnies. Heck, I like animals, period. I could probably recreate the entire animal food chain in our house.

Good one yorolpal. I'm sure it may be different elsewhere but out here in the wild west Coyotes are a menace to pets, livestock, small children etc. No permit required.
