I was doing punch ins with my usual settings with multiple takes in one track.  The previous take wouldn't play back and the wav form was done as an outline on the monitor screen.  I know there is a 'work-a-round' by just recording each take on individual tracks but this was odd behavior that I would like to know what happened.   Thanks!  Chuck

"What does a waveform shown in outline only indicate?"
I may have found the 'mute' tool by accident according to this thread.  Though I'm not totally convinced that was full problem.  For now I'm going to stay away from recording multiple takes on the same track.

I don't recall what 8.5 included feature-wise, but the "outline" aspect does seem like a region based mute.   What happens if you click-swipe across the bottom or top of the clip?   One of those should un-mute that region if that is in fact what happened.

One of the funniest responses ever posted was about this, but SteveC has your answer.

Clicking on a clip with the MUTE tool does the same as selecting a clip with the smart tool and hitting "K". It turns it gray.

Dragging thru the lower half of a clip with the MUTE tool turns it outlined or dotted lined to show its muted.
Dragging thru the upper half of a clip with the MUTE tool unmutes it.

I wonder what the reasoning behind the different displays is?
