Actually, maybe you could help me with something. I need to replace the nut on a Yamaha Pacifica 112 (strat style) and I was hoping to just snag a precut Fender nut for the thing and install it myself but the dude at the guitar desk was trying to dissuade me as he "didn't think" it would fit but I think he's full of it. Any tips on measuring this stuff out and just general advice? I really don't want to lose my main axe for an indefinite amount of time while some other dude monkeys around with it. Cheers.

Beepster I can understand why you wouldn't want
to leave it with somebody you don't know.

The deal is- the nut is not something one should mess around with.
If you don't have a pretty good grasp and the right tools things could
go south very easily.

Now there may be some out there that can whip out a nut pretty quick...
but I think it's going to take some time to make one right.
With that said you should be able to schedule it to be done so you
wouldn't be without it long at all. I know if I were doing it you could drop
it off in the morning and pick it up after lunch.....
Now if he has his act together- when you pick it up he'll ask you to play it
and he'll be prepared to "finish" it up while you go to lunch...if he needs
to lower it a little more for you......so don't eat until after you go there LOL.

Good luck Beepster.

@spacey... Right on, man and solid advice. I am rather comfortable with making minor adjustments to a nut and I do have a set of needle files. However they are NOT proper guitar needle files so they would be highly ineffective for carving a blank nut. That's kind of why I was hoping to snag a precut strat nut and tweak it from there if necessary. Essentially pop the old one out, toss in the new one, file the slots where needed. I do actually have some books detailing this process and am an internet hound so I can usually sniff up info as I go. I prefer higher action anyway so I can dig in but I also need things to stay in tune when fretted in first position as I play a LOT of big open chords there. I guess my main concern is spacing and whether the thing is gonna at worst not be wide enough which makes the thing useless... or too wide which is not so bad but still annoying. My main goal is just getting the strings up higher to get rid of the darned buzz. Truss and intonation adjustments are no big deal for me now so that's not an issue... bah. I guess I probably should just get it done professionally but I've had very bad experiences with random techs and my needs are somewhat unique. I know they'll just do something lame or not listen to what I'm trying to tell them. I'd just really like to be able to do this stuff myself. Sorry for the rant. Thread just got my mind twisted towards the topic. Cheers.

Absolutely!  Don't let just anyone mess with your nuts.
