• SONAR
  • Mix-down stems including bus fx at once

Hi there, I need to output separate mixes of each track from a sonar file. There are over 100 stereo tracks, many things are going through buses with additional processing and automation and some go on to further buses etc.

I want to bounce all the tracks out all in one go.
- I select all, then highlight a region
- I go to export audio and select "track" in the bounce settings
- All check marks are on for each "mix enables" box

I get the stems but they don't seem to include the buss processing or buss effects. I don't see anything under presets that looks like it would fix it. I just want the same result as I would get if I manually exported each track, one by one.

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks!
JG

Wondering if anyone has had this problem?
Please help!
Thanks

Well, I don't think it's a problem with SONAR, but a misunderstanding of how/what to select for your export.
If 'Tracks' is your export source, that audio is before the buses, so any effects in the buses won't get included in the export.
Presumably, you have all your tracks routed to buses, and all your buses routed to 1 Master bus. Select that Master bus for your export.

You'll probably have to do two passes. For one, select all tracks that are not going, as their main output, to a bus (other than the master output). For the next one, select all tracks but in the export dialog select "source category" "buses" and export all buses.

But, you won't then get all your tracks in one go.

I know you can export the buses but it wouldn't separate the tracks.

I'm hoping to get all tracks to export separately and simultaneously in a "what you hear" mix. Like exporting each track one at a time in solo, the mix would include all the buss processing and everything only it's batch processed in the export window.

There must be a way to do that.... no? I would think many people creating stems would need them to sound the way they sound in the session.

When source category is tracks it will export each track independently.
Similarly when source category is buses it will export all buses that you pick.
There is presently no way to export each track independently but through its destination buses. Its not such a common requirement, since typically when you need stem mixes one  actually wants all tracks routed to the stem buses included as well.

Why do you need tracks independently bounced through a given bus? Keep in mind that if you do this mixing your stems will NOT necessarily be equal to the mix without stems. Esp if you have reverbs and dynamics processing on the bus.
i.e sending multiple tracks through a chain of effects independently may not equal first summing the tracks and then sending the summed signal through the fx.

It could be a much more common situation, which I run into from time to time. I'll have some backing vocals summing to a bus, a bass guitar not going to a bus (except master), some effect samples going to a bus and my piano part not going to a bus. Now I need to export stems. Only way to do that is in two passes - one for the busses and one for the "singles". Would be nice if there were a way to do all of them in one go.

As far as I know you can't, that's why I said you need to do two passes. Still a lot better than doing every track individually, no?

Hi Jono,
I've never been able to find a way to do what you're looking for, and it's something that I would really LOVE to see.

Just an explanation for those who were wondering about a use case on this, I most frequently need this when doing film stuff. Here's an example from a fairly simple project I did recently.

Production audio (dialog 'n such) -> ProdAud bus -> Master
Cello 1 -> Cello bus (automation and stuff) -> score bus -> Master
Cello 2 -> Cello bus (automation and stuff) -> score bus -> Master
Piano -> Piano bus (automation) -> score bus -> Master
Bowed metal -> perc bus (automation) -> score bus -> Master
Misc perc -> perc bus (automation) -> score bus -> Master

In this case each bus represents an instrument group and a stem. The score bus has automation for the entire score. Since many of the editors I work with like to have stems, it would be REALLY REALLY handy to be able to bounce each bus (or track) to a separate file while still honoring the bus fx and automation. If we had that I could export each stem in one pass, zip them up and send them off instead of doing one pass for each bus to keep my automation intact.

I've given some thought to using aux tracks and then selecting them for my bounce source, but the problem is the (absolutely required) "score" bus. Since it represents automation for the entire score and has multiple "stems" feeding it I think I'm going to run into the same problem.
